After being transported to a hospital, the young girl died on May 21, becoming the third person killed in the May 17 crash that also killed her parents, Xiomara Herrera, 30, of Falls Church; and Alejandro Rodriguez Castillo, 27, of Sterling.

Fairfax County police said the young boy, who was in the backseat at the time of the crash, remains hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.

Fairfax County Police Chief Kevin Davis said at a news conference last week that Herrera was driving a Mercedes GLA 250 eastbound in the Interstate 66 express lanes when she took an exit to Chain Bridge Road, struck a median on Route 123 and “collided very violently with the bridge wall.”

“We know speed was an absolute factor in this fatal crash,” Davis said. “We suspect there may be more than one factor.”

Herrera died at the scene and Castillo, who was in the passenger seat, later died at the hospital.

The 8-year-old was the only person in the car properly buckled in, police said.

Detectives working the case are asking anyone with information to come forward and contact the Crash Reconstruction Unit at 703-280-0543 or by submitting an anonymous tip through Crime Solvers by phone at 866-411-8477.

Gov. Moore passes 2 immigration bills into law without his signature /maryland/2026/05/maryland-bills-signed-into-law-include-youth-justice-reform-act/ Tue, 26 May 2026 21:36:55 +0000 /?p=29293525&preview=true&preview_id=29293525 Maryland Gov. Wes Moore signed dozens of bills into law in Annapolis, including one that eliminates the practice of automatically charging juveniles as adults in a wide category of crimes.

Under the , teenagers younger than 18 can still be charged as adults in cases of first-degree murder and rape.

At the bill-signing ceremony Tuesday, Maryland General Assembly Senate President Bill Ferguson said, “Here in Maryland, we charge more children as adults than every other state, other than Alabama. This bill will change that.”

Ferguson said in some instances, Maryland charged 14-year-olds as adults: “For cases, that almost always, almost always, ended back into the juvenile court anyway.”

Ferguson said the legislation will keep cases “in the right court from the start, which actually, and by the data, makes us safer and is better for those young people.”

While the bill was celebrated at the signing at the Maryland State House, Ivan Bates, the president of the Maryland State’s Attorneys Association, wrote in a statement, “violent juvenile crime continues to grow out of control because the Department of Juvenile Services is ill-equipped to handle these young, violent repeat offenders.”

Bates, who testified in opposition to the bill, added, “sending these violent offenders back to the juvenile system and giving them a timeout is not the answer to such egregiously violent crimes.”

Gov. Moore touted the bill, telling 草莓传媒 in an interview that while crime is down among most other categories, juvenile crime cases are often clogging the system.

“On average, that process takes about four months, and in some cases, it’ll take much longer. that delay does matter because it means that accountability comes too late for that young person; it means the services come too late to that young person, and it means that we miss a critical window to change behavior and actually improve outcomes,” he said.

Moore said by automatically charging minors as adults does not give the state the opportunity to get them “the services and supports that they need, and the vast majority of cases just to kick down a juvenile court anyway.”

Maryland Gov. Moore talks to 草莓传媒 about some of the bills he signed into state law

Immigration and travel laws

One of the others bills signed into law by the governor puts additional protections in place for people who It stems from the 2024 deaths of a Bowie couple that died during extreme heat while performing the Hajj pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia.

The family of Alhaji Alieu Dausy and Haja Isatu Wurie said once they were in the Middle Eastern country, they received messages saying the travel agency they booked the trip through did not provide proper documents, preparation, food, water or transportation. They were forced to walk for two hours and were among the 1,300 people who died in the extreme heat.

Gov. Moore told 草莓传媒 that while the bill “was inspired by a tragedy,” it will benefit thousands of other Maryland travelers.

“It requires all sellers of travel to register annually with the Department of Labor; it requires that they prove that they hold at least $1 million in professional liability insurance before accepting any payments; and it also makes sure that it establishes the sellers of travel services registry fund, because what that will do is that will help empower the state to aggressively enforce safety standards and ensure that every Marylander can know that the agency that they’re booking with is in good standing,” he said.

Other bills signed into law included the “.” The law requires school systems to create “bell-to-bell” phone policies at all elementary, middle and high schools by the 2027-2028 school year.

Moore, however, did not sign two important immigration-based bills 鈥 the Community Trust Act and the Data Privacy Act 鈥 but will

“Maryland will always work with the federal government when that coordination makes our people safer, but we are not going to let untrained, unqualified and unaccountable ICE agents just deputize our well-trained local law enforcement officers to do immigration work,” he told 草莓传媒.

Moore said the state plans to work with local law enforcement departments to create task forces to handle “the most violent offenders 鈥 and I don’t care about their immigration status.”

“Local law enforcement does critical work in their communities to keep us safe, and this legislation ensures they can focus on doing that job and not necessarily ICE’s,” he said. “We’re not going to allow them to deputize our local law enforcement agencies in order to do immigration work.”

Also, a that was passed is designed to add to the state’s housing stock by barring local jurisdictions form collecting development impact fees or excise taxes on residential projects until after construction is finished. The intent is to ease any upfront barriers to building more new homes.

‘Shopping cart killer’ sentenced to life in prison for 2021 murders /virginia/2026/05/shopping-cart-killer-sentenced-to-life-in-prison-for-2021-murders/ Sat, 23 May 2026 08:54:37 +0000 /?p=29282714 Anthony Eugene Robinson, also known as the “shopping cart killer,” was sentenced Friday to life in prison for the 2021 murders of two women in Harrisonburg, Virginia, whose bodies he transported in a shopping cart and concealed in an undeveloped lot.

Last year, Robinson was convicted of murdering 54-year-old Allene 鈥淏eth鈥 Redmon and 39-year-old聽Tonita Lorice Smith in a Harrisonburg motel room in the fall of 2021. A jury found him guilty of two counts of first-degree murder, two counts of aggravated murder and two counts of concealing a dead body in 2025.

During the four-day trial last year, jurors watched hotel surveillance video showing Robinson entering a motel room with the two women on separate occasions and leaving the next morning with a shopping cart covered by a sheet.

The jury at that time recommended four life sentences, plus 10 years in prison and a $400,000 fine.

Robinson is also wanted in connection with the murder of another woman in D.C. 鈥 40-year-old Sonya Champ of Northwest D.C. who was found a few blocks from Union Station in a shopping cart covered with a blanket.

Robinson is suspected in the deaths of two more women in Fairfax County 鈥 Stephanie Harrison, 48, of Redding, California, and Cheyenne Brown, 29, of Southeast D.C, near the Moon Inn Hotel in Alexandria. Their remains were found in a plastic container near a shopping cart, in a wooded area near the 2400 block of Fairhaven Avenue.

No formal charges have been filed against Robinson in the deaths of Harrison and Brown in Fairfax County.

Bowie police officer found guilty on all charges after shooting at man on Md. highway /prince-georges-county/2026/05/bowie-police-officer-found-guilty-on-all-charges-after-shooting-at-man-on-md-highway/ Thu, 21 May 2026 21:00:25 +0000 /?p=29275151 The Bowie police officer accused of shooting at a stopped vehicle on Maryland Route 197 in 2024 was found guilty Wednesday of attempted murder.

Sgt. Robert Warrington, a 12-year veteran of the Bowie Police Department, was found guilty of attempted second-degree murder, first-degree assault, reckless endangerment and misconduct in office.

It all stems from an incident in September 2024 when Warrington, 37, was captured pulling up to help what appeared to be a stranded driver on Collington Road. A聽man walked by and said the woman driving was with him and taking him to the hospital. Moments later, Warrington pulled out his service weapon and fired a shot in the man’s direction.

The man was not shot, and no one was injured in the shooting, but a passing car was struck by the bullet.

The man fell to the ground as the woman in the car got out and repeatedly shouted, 鈥淲hat did you do?鈥

Warrington can be heard saying 鈥渉e had a gun鈥 and the man responded from the ground, 鈥淚 don鈥檛 have a gun.鈥

Shortly after that, Warrington can be heard repeating 鈥淚鈥檓 sorry,鈥 several times.

The woman said the man she was with was going back to get a hat that had fallen from the car.

A Prince George’s County judge ruled Wednesday that nothing about the interaction showed an immediate threat, calling it a non-threatening situation that should not have escalated to a use of force. The judge also said she disagreed with Warrington’s claims during the two-day trial that the gun went off unintentionally.

She said the shooting was not reasonable, necessary and proportional.

The mother of the victim, Nicole, told 草莓传媒 that two lives were changed on that day, but “hopefully some counseling, growth and healing, everyone will be OK in the end.” She said her son has struggled to move forward after the incident.

“I don’t think he’ll view law enforcement the same. He definitely is going to have to get past that,” she said.

In a statement on Thursday, Prince George’s County State’s Attorney Tara Jackson said prosecutors discovered and disclosed a piece of information to the defense after the verdict was read. The disclosure was filed in court and the defense has the opportunity to respond.

Warrington is out on personal recognizance and expected to return to court for sentencing on Sept. 11.

DC Council member Trayon White’s bribery trial now set for September /dc/2026/05/a-dc-councilmembers-bribery-trial-is-now-set-for-september/ Tue, 19 May 2026 08:25:39 +0000 /?p=29267573&preview=true&preview_id=29267573 A judge denied D.C. Council member Trayon White’s motion to dismiss his federal bribery case last week. The trial is set to move forward and will begin in a few months.

The Ward 8 council member was arrested in August 2024 and is accused of accepting $35,000 in cash bribes to influence city contracts. Prosecutors say he agreed to accept $156,000 from a business owner in exchange for pressuring D.C. government employees at two different agencies to extend those contracts.

White was expelled from the council in late 2024 but was reelected months later.

He has pleaded not guilty.

In a decision issued last week, U.S. District Judge Rudolph Contreras said White’s jury trial is set to begin in September.

White had requested the bribery charge be dismissed, stating that each of the four alleged payments should be tried as separate offenses, according to court documents. The court denied this motion and said “the four payments CHS-1 made to Mr. White between June and August 2024 were part of a single, continuing scheme.”

White also asked the court to preclude, or rule out, any evidence relating to his gambling, arguing it “plays prejudicially on class stereotypes and other prejudicial preconceptions.” The prosecution disputed that, saying the evidence is necessary and that it can show White “spending substantial amounts of money on chips at a casino shortly after receiving the envelops of cash from CHS-1.”

The judge denied that request abut noted in court documents that “the stigma may be higher when the gambling conduct involves a public official.”

Also denied were two requests by the prosecution, including one seeking to prevent White from arguing he was entrapped by law enforcement.

Man charged after injuring 6 in north Prince George’s County shooting and carjacking spree /prince-georges-county/2026/05/man-charged-after-injuring-6-in-north-prince-georges-county-shooting-and-carjacking-spree/ Sat, 16 May 2026 21:28:58 +0000 /?p=29258059 Larry James Simpson, a 68-year-old Glen Burnie man, is facing 66 charges in connection to several shootings and carjackings that injured six people Friday afternoon in the northern part of Prince George’s County, Maryland.

Prince George’s County Police said in a Saturday release that, of the 66 offenses, Simpson was charged with 16 counts of attempted first-degree murder and 16 counts of attempted second-degree murder. Officials did not name the other 34 charges.

Authorities said additional charges may be pending.

Police Chief George Nader said officers received reports around 2:30 p.m. Friday of a man with a gun shooting from a car in the 5100 block of Pierce Avenue in College Park.

Around 2:50 p.m., Nader said Simpson shot at a 64-year-old man in a car, and that the shots shattered the glass window which cut the man’s face.

Shortly after that, officers received a call for a car accident in the area of 67th Avenue and Patterson Street in the East Riverdale area around 3 p.m. Nader said Simpson got out of the crashed vehicle and began shooting at people in the area, injuring at least five people.

Simpson later shot at and carjacked a woman in the area of Good Luck Road and Kenilworth Avenue in Riverdale Park.

“At that carjacking, an off-duty Prince George’s County Police officer, who was unarmed in his personal vehicle, who was alerted that there was a shooting going on in the area by his wife, who is also a police officer, observed the carjacking 鈥 and began to follow the suspect, ” Nader said.

When police arrived in the 900 block of Edmonston Road, Simpson got out of the vehicle and fired at the off-duty officer. U.S. Park Police arrived on the scene and Simpson pointed the gun at them.

“We believe that he was out of bullets at that time. He dropped the weapon and was taken into custody with no additional shots being fired,” Nader said.

Nader added that officials have recovered the AR-15 rifle that Simpson was using.

Police said two victims have been transported to a hospital for treatment, with one in critical condition and the other with life-threatening injuries. Authorities said there is no threat to the community and there are no outstanding suspects.

Simpson was also transported to a hospital with injuries Nader said he sustained in the car accident.

“I’ve not seen bravery like that in my 33 years of service,” Nader said of the unarmed off-duty officer who followed the shooter.

Nearby schools in the area were due to police activity. The lockdown was lifted for most of the schools around 4:25 p.m.

草莓传媒 Traffic reporter Dave Dildine said at least three Maryland state highways were partially or completely blocked by various police agencies, including Route 193 Greenbelt Road at Kenilworth Avenue, Route 201 Kenilworth Avenue at Campus Drive and Route 410 Riverdale Road under the Baltimore-Washington Parkway.

2 Maryland residents exposed to hantavirus while traveling near infected passenger /maryland/2026/05/2-maryland-residents-exposed-to-hantavirus-while-traveling-near-infected-passenger/ Tue, 12 May 2026 09:30:35 +0000 /?p=29243291 Maryland health leaders are monitoring two residents who may have been exposed to hantavirus during international travel.

The possible exposure is tied to a flight that included a passenger from the cruise ship where the started.

The two Maryland residents were not passengers on the ship and are being monitored out of an abundance of caution. Experts with the stressed the risk to the public remains very low.

The incubation period for hantavirus can range from four to 42 days, which is why health officials continue monitoring people who may have been exposed. Asymptomatic individuals are not considered infectious, according to state and federal health officials.

Dr. Kari Debbink, a scientist at Johns Hopkins University’s Bloomberg School of Public Health, told 草莓传媒 the strain identified in recent reports, the Andes virus, is the only known strain of hantavirus that can spread from person to person.

No cases have been reported in Maryland since 2019, and none have involved this strain. With the Andes virus, MDH said person-to-person transmission “is rare and generally requires close, prolonged contact with an infected individual or their bodily fluids.”

Most hantavirus cases in the United States are linked to contact with rodents. The Andes virus, which has been reported primarily in South America, is unusual because of its limited potential for person-to-person spread.

“I think what we’re seeing is on par with what we would expect for this particular virus,” Debbink said, adding that the low risk to the public means people shouldn’t panic.

“This is a virus that doesn’t spread super efficiently between people. In past outbreaks with Andes virus, what we’ve seen is that it spreads between people that have come into close and prolonged contact. This isn’t something that spreads as readily as COVID or flu, for instance,” Debbink said.

At least 10 confirmed or suspected cases of hantavirus have been linked to the cruise ship outbreak, including three deaths, according to public health officials.

Health officials are conducting contact tracing connected to the cruise ship, and passengers returning home are being monitored by health officials in their home states, including Virginia.

The Maryland Department of Health said it is coordinating with federal and international partners, including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, as the investigation continues.

One Virginian was among the 17 Americans aboard the cruise ship and is now at home being monitored for symptoms.

Health officials said anyone who develops symptoms such as fever, fatigue or shortness of breath after recent international travel should contact a healthcare provider.

“As long as we’re not seeing cases pop up outside of (the World Health Organization’s) contact tracing, we’re in pretty good shape. So far, all the cases have been associated with people that were on the ship,” Debbink said.

Former Chinatown Walgreens manager sentenced to nearly 3 years for inside-job robberies /dc/2026/05/former-chinatown-walgreens-manager-sentenced-to-nearly-3-years-for-inside-job-robberies/ Fri, 08 May 2026 21:30:36 +0000 /?p=29231778 The former manager of a Walgreens in D.C.’s Chinatown neighborhood was sentenced Thursday to 32 months in prison for her part in a coordinated string of robberies at the store.

London Teeter, 22, of D.C., was employed as the store manager when she took part in seven inside-job robberies with three other people. She pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to interfere with interstate commerce by robbery in February 2025.

Over the span of nine months, from July 2023 to February 2024, Teeter, along with Michael Robinson and Kamanye Williams, 26, relayed information about cash transfers inside the store to Gianni Robinson, Michael’s nephew. Gianni would then pass that information along to Williams, who would take money from the safe in the manager鈥檚 office at gunpoint.

Teeter knew the timing of the cash transfers and would allow a masked gunman, Williams, to rob the store’s employees using a code she provided.

Michael Robinson, 35, the second manager at the store, was sentenced to 12 years behind bars in October 2025. Teeter and he would take turns being the victim of the robberies because they knew the crimes were being recorded on surveillance cameras.

During the last robbery, Williams was shot by a special police officer hired by Walgreens to protect the business. In a release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for D.C., prosecutors said Teeter was aware the special officers were hired and that a co-conspirator had robbed one of them of a firearm.

鈥淟ondon Teeter was a key architect of a seven-month scheme that repeatedly turned her own workplace into a crime scene,鈥 U.S. Attorney for D.C. Jeanine Pirro said in 鈥淭he sentencing guidelines called for 87-to-108 months. This sentence, which is significantly lighter, does little to protect the citizens of the District.鈥

Pirro’s office had originally requested a 100-month (over eight-year) prison sentence.

In total, Teeter and her co-conspirators stole about $29,000.

After her 2-year and eight-month sentence, Teeter will serve three years of supervised release.

In a news release, the zoo said staff had become concerned about her ability to safely move in recent weeks as she became weaker.

Shera arrived at the D.C. zoo in 2006 with her sister Nababiep from a private reserve in South Africa, and a young male named Luke. She would later welcome eight cubs over her lifetime with Luke, and become one of the two oldest living lions in Association of Zoos and Aquariums-accredited zoos.

Luke was humanely euthanized at age 17 in October 2022.

Two of Shera and Luke鈥檚 male offspring, Shaka and Jumbe, can be seen at the zoo’s Great Cats exhibit.

“The decision to euthanize an animal is never taken lightly and never conducted independently. Multiple teams 鈥 including the animal husbandry team and veterinary team 鈥 work together to assess the animal鈥檚 quality of life,” the zoo said in a release on Tuesday.

Keepers at the zoo had been managing pain level but said they knew her health would continue to deteriorate.

“Geriatric care required considerable time spent managing Shera with extra TLC, and she loved the attention. Shera was adored and will be greatly missed,” Leigh Pitsko, assistant curator of Great Cats, said.

Dept. of Justice investigating Fairfax County’s top attorney over handling of cases involving immigrants /fairfax-county/2026/05/dept-of-justice-investigating-fairfax-countys-top-attorney-over-handling-of-cases-involving-immigrants/ Thu, 07 May 2026 01:42:19 +0000 /?p=29222890 The Department of Justice said Wednesday it was initiating an investigation into Fairfax County Commonwealth’s Attorney Steve Descano over his office’s handling of cases involving undocumented immigrants.

In , Assistant Attorney General for the Civil Rights Division Harmeet Dhillon said the DOJ is investigating whether his office violated Title VI of the Civil Rights Act and the Safe Streets Act, which both “prohibit recipients of Federal financial assistance from discriminating based upon race, color, or national origin.”

The investigation, it said, would also determine if Descano’s office “discriminated against United States citizens by offering preferential treatment only to illegal alien criminal defendants.”

In a , Dhillon said her office would “not allow local prosecutors to pick and choose winners based on their immigration status,鈥 and would work to see if Descano’s legal decisions have put “the community at risk in offering sweetheart deals to illegal immigrants charged with serious crimes.”

The policy in question was adopted by Descano’s office in 2020 as part of its guidelines for plea bargaining. It instructs assistant Commonwealth’s attorneys to “consider immigration consequences where possible” and states that “prosecutors shall consider 鈥 the collateral immigration consequences of the specific crime(s) the defendant is charged with.”

The webpage detailing the policy is no longer publicly available on his office’s website.

Descano did not respond to 草莓传媒’s requests for comment but defended his policies in “Today, I received notice of a Department of Justice investigation into my office regarding one of our policies. My policies are fair, legal, and reflect the values of my community.”

Washington Post reporter Salvador Rizzo told 草莓传媒’s Nick Iannelli that a second prong of the investigation is a “pattern and practice investigation” that usually leads to strict reforms, especially when used against police departments that have constitutional policing issues.

“Since Descano was first elected in 2019, there has been a lot of conservative pushback to some of his decisions when he’s seeking particular sentences for defendants who might be deported, depending on the seriousness of the crime that he charges,” Rizzo said.

Critics have said that Descano鈥檚 office has offered more lenient plea deals to undocumented immigrants accused of serious felonies so they avoid deportation.

“He’s become much more vocal, especially this year, in defending his policies,” Rizzo said.

Along with Arlington County Commonwealth鈥檚 Attorney Parisa Dehghani-Tafti, another local Democratic prosecutor, Descano has been the recent target of the House Judiciary subcommittee on Immigration Integrity, Security and Enforcement. He’s scheduled to testify before the subcommittee next week.

“Descano has been, at first, I think, a little bit just dismissive and maybe even indifferent about these accusations. And now he sees a need to really more strongly speak up for himself and defend these policies as legal,” Rizzo said.

Florida man faces charges after ending multiday protest atop DC’s Frederick Douglass bridge /dc/2026/05/man-comes-down-from-dcs-frederick-douglass-bridge-wednesday-ending-6-day-protest/ Wed, 06 May 2026 16:15:21 +0000 /?p=29218793
Man comes down from DC鈥檚 Frederick Douglass bridge

The Florida man who scaled the Frederick Douglass Bridge in Southwest D.C. last week has been charged after ending his protest atop the bridge as it entered a sixth day, police tell 草莓传媒.

With the assistance of D.C. Fire and EMS, Guido Reichstadter, 45, left his perch at the top of the bridge just before 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, after climbing the bridge barefoot on Friday.

He’s been charged with crowding, obstructing, or incommoding; unlawful entry and failure to obey an officer, according to D.C. police.

Reichstadter packed up his belongings, trekked down part of the bridge and then got into the basket of a fire truck, hoisted up to meet him partway.

After he stepped down into that basket, it appears first responders seemingly restrained Reichstadter by his hands.

A spokesman for the fire department told 草莓传媒 that Reichstadter was brought to a nearby hospital to be checked out, but he isn’t believed to be injured.

Reichstadter scaled one of the bridge鈥檚 arches Friday as police and bystanders watched. He unfurled a long black banner and said in posts on social media he was protesting artificial intelligence and the wars in Iran and Palestine.

D.C. police previously confirmed to 草莓传媒 that the Florida man had previously climbed the same bridge聽after Roe v. Wade was overturned in 2022.

In a Tuesday, Reichstadter said he had run out of water on Sunday and would be coming down from the bridge.

“I hope that this action has offered something to motivate and inspire you, and that it can serve as fuel for greater commitment and action in the cause of peace and in the fight for our future,” he wrote.

The bridge was briefly closed in both directions as first responders worked to get Reichstadter down Wednesday morning.聽草莓传媒’s Traffic Center reported that all lanes were closed at around 9:10 a.m., and the bridge reopened around 30 minutes later.

His ascent had a significant impact on the Friday afternoon rush hour; authorities had shutdown the bridge in both directions for several hours.

D.C. Fire and EMS said a high鈥慳ngle technical rescue team has been working with police since Friday afternoon.

Reichstadter told 草莓传媒’s Alan Etter that he had considered coming down on Monday but was able to find the “stamina to stay up here a bit longer” and a method to charge his phone.

草莓传媒’s Neal Augenstein contributed to this report.

Multiple high-ranking DC police leaders placed on leave after crime stats probe /dc/2026/05/multiple-high-ranking-dc-police-leaders-demoted-after-crime-stats-probe/ Tue, 05 May 2026 22:40:02 +0000 /?p=29217038 Thirteen officials within D.C.’s police department were placed on administrative leave Monday after an internal investigation into allegations of manipulated crime data.

At a news conference Tuesday, interim Police Chief Jeffery Carroll said 13 officials were placed on administrative leave due to the “allegations of misconduct.” He said he was unable to share further details about the suspensions.

“All 13 members were served 鈥 a notice of proposed adverse action,” Carroll said. “No one was fired.”

“I cannot get into any specifics of the investigation. The administrative process must be allowed to take its course, and that process is outlined in our MPD general orders,” he said.

Carroll also announced the replacements of some of the high-ranking members of the department who were suspended.

Former Fourth District Cmdr. Nikki Lavenhouse was promoted to assistant chief of Patrol Services South; Cmdr. Christopher Dorsey was named the commander of the Second District, and Cmdr. David Hong was named the Fourth District commander.

Dorsey replaces Cmdr. Tatjana Savoy and Lavenhouse replaces Assistant Chief LaShay Makal. According to multiple reports, Makal and Savoy were suspended as part of the crime statistics investigation.

According to internal department documents shared with 草莓传媒, Cmdr. Duncan Bedlion, Capt. Nathaniel Porter and Capt. Brian Hallahan are among the other members reassigned to new positions. The impacted divisions include Patrol Services North, Patrol Services South (formerly headed by Makal), the Office of the Field Commander (formerly led by Dorsey), the Youth and Family Engagement Division (previously led by Cmdr. Sharde Harris) and the Cadet Corps Branch (previously led by Inspector Michael Jones Sr.).

“MPD cannot provide specific information on the findings of internal investigations or proposed adverse actions against specific members. Our internal affairs bureau has completed an investigation to crime reporting,” Carroll said.

Still, Carroll cited the department data that showed a decrease in crime since 2023.

“We have made meaningful progress over the last three years in reducing crime. Homicides, shootings and carjackings have fallen steadily since 2023. My top priority continues to be fighting crime, building relationships with the community, and supporting the great work to make the city safer,” he said.

In a statement in response to the department’s action, the D.C. police union cited findings from National Incident-Based Reporting System data that showed a nearly 2% increase in violent crime in D.C. in 2024, compared with D.C.’s cited 28% decrease. The police union said the alleged manipulation endangered public safety and called Monday’s action “long-overdue.”

In January, the D.C. Inspector General announced its investigation into the police department’s crime data reporting system 鈥 a system already under scrutiny at the time following claims by President Donald Trump that crime in D.C. was much worse that what statistics showed.

“We use crime statistics every day to help us with deployment across the city. I do have confidence in those numbers,” Carroll said. “We don’t want to minimize any crime. Obviously, we want to make sure the crimes are appropriately classified.”

Carroll said the department is continuing to work with the House Oversight Committee, would be demanding a release of documents from the police department’s internal investigation.
