that investigators believe Donald Reineke, 89, of Frederick, was crossing Route 40 from Harmony Road around 9:20 p.m. when a vehicle driven by John Michael Hartman Jr., 40, of Frederick, collided with him.

Responding officers declared Reineke dead at the scene of the crash.

Hartman had to be airlifted to a Baltimore-area hospital for treatment.

The crash is still under investigation.

The fire started in a garage in the 1800 block of 8th street North West around 2 a.m., about a block away from the Shaw-Howard University Metro Station. Flames damaged the interior of the first floor and the exterior of the second floor of a row home next door.

The person inside that home was able to get out without the help of firefighters.

Emergency responders helped one adult get out of another home. No one was hurt, according to D.C. Fire and EMS.

Crews are still investigating what started the fire.

The change drastically reduces the number of guests who can attend. Those who can’t make it into the ceremony can watch the proceedings virtually on ²ÝÝ®´«Ã½ Saturday morning at 10 a.m.

Though the university normally holds its graduation outdoors, flood warnings across the District pushed the ceremony into Burr Gymnasium. Most guests won’t be allowed into the gymnasium as the change cuts the ceremony’s capacity by nearly 90%.

Empire star and D.C. native Taraji  P. Henson will be the main commencement speaker.
