DC police shoot man they say threatened an officer with a gun /dc/2021/08/dc-police-shoot-man-they-say-threatened-an-officer-with-a-gun/ /dc/2021/08/dc-police-shoot-man-they-say-threatened-an-officer-with-a-gun/#respond Wed, 25 Aug 2021 00:40:40 +0000 /?p=22730311 A man was shot by a D.C. police officer on Tuesday after he allegedly threatened the officer with a gun.

It happened around 5:45 p.m. in the 1700 block of Minnesota Avenue in Southeast near 18th Street. Police were called for suspected drug activity.

An officer spoke with the man before the “officer sent him on his way,” D.C. Police Chief Robert Contee said. As the man left, the officer noticed what he believed to be a concealed gun.

The officer called for backup and tried to stop the man from leaving. That’s when the man pulled a gun on the officer, police said.

Contee said the man took a firearm from the rear of his body and brandished it. The officer attempted to talk down the victim several times before firing.

Police said the man remained conscious and was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

“This is a brave officer who was out here doing his job,” Contee said. “He was actually showing compassion by moving someone who was involved in the use of illegal drugs, moving that person on. But unfortunately this person was armed and decided to pull a firearm on the officer and he defended himself.”

Contee said they are still trying to determine whether the man fired his gun.

Below is the area where it happened.

Boil water advisory issued for NE DC neighborhoods /dc/2021/08/boil-water-advisory-issued-for-several-ne-dc-neighborhoods/ /dc/2021/08/boil-water-advisory-issued-for-several-ne-dc-neighborhoods/#respond Thu, 05 Aug 2021 11:35:02 +0000 /?p=22666210
This map shows the impacted areas for the Boil Water Advisory. Click to enlarge. (Courtesy DC Water)

A boil water advisory is in effect for parts of Northeast D.C., and DC Water says the earliest normal water use can be expected to return is Saturday.

The boil water advisory affects 14,000 customers, according to John Lisle, spokesman for DC Water.

While isolating a leak on a transmission line Wednesday afternoon, crews closed valves in the area of 13th Street and Spring Road in Northwest, according to from DC Water. Following the repairs, customers in Northeast D.C. called reporting a loss of water pressure.

Neighborhoods affected include Brookland, Fort Lincoln, Woodridge, Queens Chapel, Michigan Park and North Michigan Park. Use to find if a property is in the affected area.

The impacted area includes homes and businesses:

  • East of North Capitol Street
  • West of Eastern Avenue
  • South of New Hampshire Avenue
  • North of New York Avenue

“Due to the loss of pressure in the system, it may have been for bacteria or other disease-causing organisms to enter the water through cracks, breaks or joints in the distribution system,” the utility said.

It is unknown if water was contaminated, and the boil water notice is being made as a precaution. DC Water is collecting samples and will lift the advisory when tests on two consecutive days show no bacteria is present.

Stuart Anderson, Director of Community Engagement with the Anacostia Coordinating Council, and his team have been alerting Ward 5 residents about the importance of getting vaccinated as well as the boil water advisory.

Anderson said his group, part of D.C.’s COVID-19 vaccine team, is usually focused east of the Anacostia, but they’re going door-to-door in the impacted area.

“It’s a great opportunity for us to inform people about the issues with the water, and also have a great excuse to ask them whether or not they’ve been vaccinated,” he said.

Anderson said they’ll knock on doors to let people know.

He gave an example of what he tells residents: “We want to inform you about this water emergency that’s going on, make sure you’re boiling water if you got to use water … And we want to make sure that you and your family are safe. Oh, and by the way, have you been vaccinated?”

Customers living in an impacted area should not drink or cook with their water without boiling or only use boiled water first. Home filtering devices are not a suitable replacement for boiled or bottled water.

Cooled, boiled water or bottled water can be used for the following:

  • Drinking
  • Brushing teeth
  • Preparing and cooking food
  • Washing fruits and vegetables
  • Preparing infant formula
  • Making ice
  • Giving water to pets

If anyone is experiencing symptoms related to bacteria-related viruses and parasites, including diarrhea, cramps, nausea, headaches, or other symptoms, DC Water asks that you seek medical attention.

For additional guidance, customers can use the or check out to see if they live in an impacted neighborhood. They can also call the 24-hour Command Center at 202-612-3400.

DC’s first responders battle gas fire, water rescue, downed trees /dc/2021/07/dcs-first-responders-battle-gas-fire-water-rescue-downed-trees/ /dc/2021/07/dcs-first-responders-battle-gas-fire-water-rescue-downed-trees/#respond Tue, 27 Jul 2021 01:57:36 +0000 /?p=22624784 It was a busy Monday night for first responders in D.C. as they dealt with multiple incidents around the city.

First, a small fire burned openly in a Northeast D.C. street ignited by a downed power line that hit a gas unit on Kennedy Street at North Capitol Street, just north of Catholic University.

D.C. Fire spokesperson Vito Maggiolo said the fire is contained and, at this point, it is safer to let it burn than risk a gas spill.

Washington Gas is on the scene and working to turn off the gas flow.

Maggiolo said D.C. fire also completed a water rescue on Rhode Island Avenue in Northeast. Crews rescued one person out of a car that was submerged in high water beneath an overpass.

Late-arriving storms in the region caused major power outages and trees to fall down. According to StormTeam4 meteorologist Steve Prinzivalli, there are over 100 trees down across D.C.

Quick thinking by local mom helps find missing Hyattsville boy with autism /local/2021/06/quick-thinking-by-local-mom-helps-find-missing-hyattsville-boy-with-autism/ /local/2021/06/quick-thinking-by-local-mom-helps-find-missing-hyattsville-boy-with-autism/#respond Tue, 29 Jun 2021 03:36:25 +0000 /?p=22530763 A 14-year-old boy with autism who went missing after he left his home in Hyattsville, Maryland, has been found safe thanks to a woman whose son also has autism.

Sandra Juarez was walking into the gym with her son in Northwest D.C. when she saw the missing boy, Adrien Pleas, walking out of a Target. Juarez said she had seen the missing persons reports , and recognized Pleas by the red shirt he was wearing.

Juarez made the quick decision to go after Pleas, and tried to talk to him.

“I said ‘Hi, how are you? Can I help you? Are you lost?’ and he said ‘Hi,’ and I just knew instantly that this was the same young man,” Juarez told ²ÝÝ®´«Ã½. “The communication skills weren’t there, the eye contact wasn’t there.”

She asked the building security guard to call police as Pleas fled down the street. Juarez and her son also walked down the street, attempted to find the boy.

“I didn’t see him, but my gut instinct told me to continue walking and as soon as I crossed the street [and] the additional block, I saw the poor baby sitting down on the curb just eating his chips,” Juarez said.

Juarez approached him calmly, she said, and talked with him about the DVD he was carrying. She had 911 on the phone and eventually flagged down the police.

However, Juarez said she didn’t feel comfortable leaving Pleas alone with the officers. Instead, she took him to a nearby 7-Eleven, where she “bought him everything he could pick up,” Juarez said.

Juarez, her son and Pleas stayed inside the 7-Eleven eating snacks and playing on her phone until Pleas’ mom arrived.

“Every autistic child is different,” Juarez said. “They relate to different things and in that quick moment “don’t be afraid. they’re not monsters.”

As the mother of a child with autism, Juarez had some advice for anyone who may find themselves in a similar situation:

“Try talk to them, be patient if they are nonverbal, try to communicate with them in other ways,” Juarez said. “My advice is just don’t turn a cheek. try to do something, try to improvise. You could make a difference.”
