Fuel had soaked into the dirt surrounding the tanks and the digging released the fumes as the soil was disturbed, said D.C. Fire and EMS spokesman Vito Maggiolo.

One person was taken to the hospital for observation. The school was evacuated as a precaution and students quickly returned inside to resume classes.

The Jefferson Memorial remained open to the public but the elevator was taken out of service so that it could be inspected, the park service said.

Officials: Fairfax Co. trash center fire under control, in ‘clean-up’ phase /fairfax-county/2017/02/trash-fire-at-fairfax-co-recycling-center-under-control/ /fairfax-county/2017/02/trash-fire-at-fairfax-co-recycling-center-under-control/#respond Fri, 03 Feb 2017 16:00:58 +0000 http://wtop.com/?p=12457791 WASHINGTON — A fire that started Thursday night at the recycling and disposal center in Fairfax County is under control, and firefighters are now in the “clean-up portion” of their response, an official said Saturday morning.

Ryland Kendrick, battalion chief of Fairfax County Fire and Rescue, said the major fire was out Saturday morning, but they are waiting on equipment to extinguish the fire fully.

“We are awaiting arrival of heavy equipment to move the trash around so that we can disperse it and then extinguish it,” Kendrick said in a on Fairfax County Fire and Rescue’s YouTube Channel around 9:30 a.m. Saturday. “Right now, the fire is too deeply seeded to extinguish directly, so we are maintaining control, isolating the environment and, again, awaiting the arrival of heavy equipment from Covanta.”

Three stories of trash caught fire in a building at the Covanta Fairfax Waste to Energy Facility, on Furnace Road in Lorton, a little after 9 p.m. Thursday, officials said.

The fire department said the fire began on the tipping floor of the building, and extended to the holding pit, which was full. It took about 60 firefighters to get the blaze under control, but it’s continuing to smolder, and fire officials said Friday that it would take several days to put out completely.

No injuries have been reported as of Saturday  morning, Kendrick said, and there is no immediate safety hazard around the building or to those working to the firefighters and other workers.

It’s also not a health hazard, the fire department said Friday, and the cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Thirteen residents and one employee were moved from the west building to the east building.

The gas was then cut off and no one was injured, Davies said. Officials believe the heating and air system may be the cause of the leak.

Carbon monoxide leak sends DC family to hospital /dc/2016/12/carbon-monoxide-leak-sends-dc-family-hospital/ /dc/2016/12/carbon-monoxide-leak-sends-dc-family-hospital/#respond Thu, 22 Dec 2016 14:48:09 +0000 http://wtop.com/?p=11883221 WASHINGTON — A family of three was taken to a hospital Thursday morning after being exposed to carbon monoxide in Northeast D.C.

D.C. Fire and EMS said they were called to a home on 20th Street, near and Kearney Street, in Northeast, in response to a report of a man having a heart attack. But when they arrived, they detected carbon monoxide that were “off the charts,” and deduced that that was the real problem, spokesman Doug Buchanan said.

The man, the father in the family, was unconscious when he was taken to the hospital; along the way, he regained consciousness and is expected to be OK. The mother and a teenage daughter also were taken to the hospital with serious, but non-life threatening injuries.

Fire officials believe the cause of the carbon monoxide leak was a furnace that had been worked on Wednesday.

There were carbon monoxide detectors in the home, fire officials said, but the batteries weren’t working.
