Man arrested for selling fake World Series tickets near Nats Park /dc/2019/10/man-arrested-for-selling-fake-world-series-tickets-near-nats-park/ /dc/2019/10/man-arrested-for-selling-fake-world-series-tickets-near-nats-park/#respond Sun, 27 Oct 2019 20:32:04 +0000 /?p=20333358 If you’re hoping to get a last minute ticket to the World Series, you may need to watch out for ticket scams.

A West Virginia man was arrested on Friday for allegedly selling fake World Series tickets.

Ondre Nelson, 54, of Huntington, sold a man the fake tickets near the entrance to Nationals Park.

Nelson sold five fake tickets for $2,000.

He has been charged with first-degree fraud.

D.C. police advise those looking to purchase tickets should buy from an official website, ask for a physical receipt of the purchase, and be wary of prices that seem too good to be true.

For some, a counterfeit might be easy to spot. For others, it’s not as simple. If you’re uncertain how to spot a fake, look for these telltale signs:

  • Printed on low-quality paper – This one is easy to catch. Most counterfeits are printed on low-quality paper, or printing will be smudged and faded. However, D.C. police note that just because a ticket appears legitimate, doesn’t always mean it is.
  • No physical receipt – If the ticket is legit, the scalper will provide a receipt. If they make excuses why they can’t provide one, it’s likely because the ticket is fake.
  • Doesn’t pass the “scratch test.” Use a penny [or your nail] and scratch a small spot of the ticket. If the markings smudge, than the ticket is likely fake.
  • Overall appearance – Ticketmaster tickets are printed on hard stock paper and feature a thin lamination which creates a slight glare in the light. If your ticket doesn’t have those attributes, and looks somewhat dull, than it’s likely the ticket is a counterfeit.
  • Doesn’t have a Ticketmaster logo – Ticketmaster’s logo is universally easy to identify. It features the word “Ticketmaster” repeated over and over, creating a thin blue rectangle. It may be outlined by a large white rectangle containing the event in the center of the ticket. If there’s no colored border, that should raise concern.
  • No bar code – If the bar code is blurry, smeared, includes smudged lines or absent: odds are your ticket is a fake.
  • Incorrect coloring and seating chart- The base color for majority of U.S. tickets are white. There might be other colors included, but the base will always be white. If the base of your ticket is a different color than white, that’s an issue. Make sure to check if the seating chart is correct as well. Seating charts are usually in alpha numerical order. Authentic tickets will include a number and letter in their seating chart, reading something like this: Floor 1, Row A. However, counterfeit tickets will include all numbers and look something like this: Floor 1, Row 1.

Loudoun Co. celebrates Little League success with parade in South Riding /loudoun-county/2019/09/loudoun-co-celebrates-little-league-success-with-parade-in-south-riding/ /loudoun-county/2019/09/loudoun-co-celebrates-little-league-success-with-parade-in-south-riding/#respond Sat, 14 Sep 2019 23:42:46 +0000 /?p=20169925 The Loudoun South team played on the Little League world stage this summer, and now they’re getting a warm welcome back home.

Loudoun County held a parade Saturday in South Riding to honor the team, which made it to the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pennsylvania.

“The welcome that they’ve gotten since they’ve been home has been amazing,” Chad Hicks from Ashburn said.

His son, Colton Hicks, plays second base for the Loudoun South team.

“It’s amazing for the kids. It’s amazing for the parents. We’re still kind of on a little bit of a high right now through the whole thing honestly,” he said.

The parade started at 1 p.m. at the Dulles South Recreation and Community Center and wound from Riding Center Drive to Freedom High School.

The celebration ended with a festival and ceremony for all the Little League teams in the county. It was a day full of marching bands, firetrucks, games, and food.

Her grandkids are part of the Senators and Red Wings teams, both of which were also in the parade.

The Loudoun South team won the Southeast Regional Championship, making them the first Virginia team in 25 years to go to the Little League World Series.

The team’s pitchers also threw two no-hitters in their first games, only the sixth U.S. team to do so in Williamsport.

“It’s unbelievable,” first baseman and pitcher Chase Triplett said. “We’re very lucky to be there.”

No need to worry: That’s just “Steve the Crane.”

The construction crane, which is being used to work on a bridge near Bull Run Regional Park, is sparking some serious meme creativity with commuters. After all, its two skyward-stretched arms hold so much possibility.

Members of a local Facebook group called “” have taken notice and are flexing their photoshopping skills. Is Steve declaring the next Lion King? Has Steve triumphantly made it up the steps in front of the Philadelphia Art Museum? Is Steve yelling, “Autobots, roll out”?

“We’re just happy to see that people have found joy on a daily basis seeing a crane resting during the daylight hours,” said Brett Crouse, marketing coordinator with Digging & Rigging Inc., which is the company that owns Steve the Crane. “He’s making a name for himself along 66.”

Crouse isn’t sure how the crane came to be known as Steve, but he’s happy to hear that the roadside superstar is “putting a smile on many people’s faces throughout the day.”

And, Steve is not just a pretty crane — he’s doing serious work with a reputable family business as the widening of I-66 continues, Crouse added.

But don’t expect Steve to stay in one place: Crouse said Steve will make the move to Sudley Road in Manassas by Monday night.

Police ID man who died after Suitland shooting near funeral gathering /prince-georges-county/2019/08/police-1-man-shot-after-large-fight-broke-out-in-suitland/ /prince-georges-county/2019/08/police-1-man-shot-after-large-fight-broke-out-in-suitland/#respond Tue, 06 Aug 2019 18:15:24 +0000 /?p=20016809 A Southeast D.C. man has died after he was shot Monday afternoon near a gathering after a funeral in Suitland, Maryland, police said Tuesday.

Prince George’s County police have identified the man as 24-year-old Mshairi Alkebular Jr. They do not believe the shooting was random, and are investigating his death as a homicide.

The shooting took place near a funeral procession on Suitland Road, near Walls Lane, just after 1 p.m. Alkebular was found shot near a vehicle, and later died in a hospital Monday night.

The shooting followed what police called a “large fight,” and they are still investigating how the fight and shooting are connected.

Police said they have reports of additional people hurt who went to hospitals on their own. Police spokesman Cpl. Nicholas Clayton said two people were dropped off at area hospitals, who appeared to have gunshot wounds; and one person was found in the woods near where the fight happened, who was injured in the wrist.

All had injuries that weren’t life-threatening, police said.

The fight had occurred following a funeral for a homicide victim in D.C., police had tweeted.

“When officers were there, deescalating the situation, about a hundred, 200 yards down the road in the 5800 block (of Suitland Road), a sound of shots rang out — several shots,” Clayton said.

Some of the officers broke away to that block, and that’s when they found Alkebular, he added.

Police said the funeral preceding the violence was held at the Deliverance Headquarters For All People Church. A was for Eric Byrd, a Southeast D.C. man who was slain July 20 in the 1100 block of U Street in D.C.

“It’s a really terrible time for someone to really act out in such a manner,” Clayton said.

Police are still piecing together what went down and in what order. Anyone with information about the shooting can call Crime Solvers at 1-866-411-TIPS (8477), .
