Police arrested the聽suspect wanted in 聽in the Aspen Hill area Friday afternoon.

At a press conference, police said they have “reason to believe” the suspect also was involved in Thursday’s shooting and two fatal shootings in Montgomery County Friday 鈥 one at Westfield Montgomery Mall and another near an Aspen Hill grocery store.

Police arrested聽Eulalio Tordil, 62, around 3 p.m. in Aspen Hill.

Tordil will be brought before a Maryland commissioner and arraigned at 1 p.m., Monday.

Police said on Thursday, Tordil followed his estranged wife, 44-year-old Gladys Tordil, onto High Point High School property and shot her. Gladys Tordil, a chemistry teacher at Parkdale High School, died later.

A male bystander, who witnessed a confrontation between the two, tried to intervene when Eulalio Tordil shot him, striking him in the shoulder. The bystander sustained non life-threatening injuries.

Prince George’s County Police have charged Tordil with first-degree murder and related charges in connection with the fatal shooting of Gladys Tordil on Thursday.

On Friday, a preliminary investigation found one person was shot in the Westfield Montgomery Mall’s parking lot around 11:15 a.m. after a confrontation, and two people who came to the victim’s aid were shot as well, said聽Assistant Montgomery County Police Chief Darryl McSwain.

One man died as a result of his injuries outside the mall. Another聽man is in grave condition and a woman is being treated for non-life threatening injuries.

Around 11:50 a.m. Friday, a shooting was reported near an Aspen Hill grocery store 鈥 fewer than 10 miles from the mall shooting scene. A woman was sitting in her car when she was shot and killed in the 13700 block of Connecticut Avenue near the Giant.聽The woman’s name has not yet been released.

According to law enforcement sources, Tordil had聽last been seen in a rental car 鈥 a silver 2015 Hyundai Elantra with Pennsylvania plates JZA0123.

The sources聽said he wanted police to kill him.聽Officers saw a vehicle matching the description and later saw Tordil at a Dunkin Donuts in Aspen Hill.

Before his arrest, Tordil ate lunch at the same Boston Market where Beltway snipers Lee Boyd Malvo and John Allen Muhammad ate after they started their 2002 shooting rampage.

Montgomery County Public Schools, which had been sheltering in place, were dismissed on time.

Laid-off tech reporter joins tech startup, writes book about ‘craziest’ experience /tech/2016/04/laid-off-tech-reporter-joins-tech-start-writes-book/ /tech/2016/04/laid-off-tech-reporter-joins-tech-start-writes-book/#respond Wed, 20 Apr 2016 10:45:16 +0000 http://wtop.com/?p=8078061 WASHINGTON 鈥 Dan Lyons was a tech reporter when he got laid off at 草莓传媒week. The magazine was discontinuing its print product and consolidating operations.

So Lyons, an experienced journalist in his 50s, thought he鈥檇 change things up a bit. Instead of holding out for another job in journalism, he tried working for a tech company instead of simply writing about them.

鈥淚 looked around and realized there weren鈥檛 many other jobs in magazines and newspapers anymore for someone like me,鈥 Lyons told 草莓传媒. 鈥淎nd I thought, 鈥榃ell, I cover the tech industry and I know a lot about the tech industry; maybe I can go work in one of these companies.鈥

Lyons found a nearby startup company 鈥 HubSpot, in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He was hired to work in marketing, and 鈥渋t was just the craziest experience I鈥檝e ever had,鈥 he said.

So crazy, Lyons said, that he left the gig less than two years later. He decided to write a book about the experience.

Out now, Lyons鈥 book, 鈥,鈥 details his time at the聽company, how tech companies operate and the “whole new way of treating employees and thinking about what work is” that he encountered there. The book is critically acclaimed, mostly due to Lyons鈥 sardonic writing style and no-frills approach.

鈥淭hings did not go well,鈥 Lyons told 草莓传媒. 鈥淚 thought I could adapt and use my journalism skills to become a marketing guy, but it really wasn鈥檛 about the skill set; it was more about the personality.

鈥漎ou really had to become … kind of a cult member, and dedicate your whole life to believing in the company mission, and dress in the company colors, and sort of buy in and think everything’s awesome.”

Lyons admitted he鈥檚 a curmudgeon and a cynic. He didn鈥檛 quite buy into the company mission, and didn鈥檛 feel comfortable blindly accepting everything the company pitched.

鈥淚 didn鈥檛 wanna stay there and party, and hang out and go to the beer blasts,鈥 he recalled. 鈥淚t was very hard to fit in.鈥

Most of all, Lyons said, he sees a huge hole in the tech industry. It鈥檚 a wealthy industry of mostly white men, he said, that doesn鈥檛 want women in leadership positions or minorities on its payroll.

And millennials are pretty much working for nothing, he said. Sure, they have fun perks such as聽free candy and drinks, but the pay is low and they鈥檙e expected to work long hours.

鈥淚 think that really has to change,鈥 Lyons said. 鈥淚 think that鈥檚 really, really shortsighted and it鈥檚 a big problem that needs to be called out.鈥

Jacinto Del Prado, 52, of Greenbelt, was struck and killed by a train around 7 a.m. in Lanham, Maryland, according to Howard County police. The department had obtained an arrest warrant for Del Prado overnight for shooting two men — killing one, and leaving the other in critical condition — at a truck stop on Assateague Drive on Sunday.

Officers were called to the shooting scene around 1 p.m. Sunday and located a dead man — Chad Dewayne Daniel, 44, of Wesley Chapel, Fla. — and another injured — Warren Anthony Weeden, 57, of Baltimore. Both were suffering from gunshot wounds. Weeden was taken to Shock Trauma and is currently in stable condition.

Police say Del Prado went to the truck stop to confront a man about a domestic matter. Detectives say Daniel and Weeden may have been shot in a case of mistaken identity.

WASHINGTON 鈥 It borrows its name from Hitchcock’s “North By Northwest” (1959), in which聽Cary聽Grant scaled Mount Rushmore’s presidential faces.

But it was a聽蝉颈迟迟颈苍驳听president who kicked off 聽over the weekend, the annual festival that has become a聽cultural touchstone in Austin, Texas since its inception back in 1987.

President Barack Obama delivered the keynote address Saturday to kick off the festival’s 聽(March 11-15).聽Affectionately “Spring Break for Nerds,” it聽featured five days of panels with the bright minds behind聽cutting-edge websites, video games and startup companies.

“We are at a moment in history where technology, globalization, our economy is changing so fast. This gathering, South By Southwest, brings together people who are at the cutting edge of those changes. Those changes offer us enormous opportunities,” President Obama told the crowd.

Meanwhile, the聽of the festival (March 11-19) opened with Austin-based filmmaker Richard Linklater (“Boyhood”) screening his latest flick “Everybody Wants Some.” It continues with the likes of聽Jean-Marc Vallee鈥檚 “Demolition,” John Lee’s “Pee Wee’s Big Holiday,” Jeff Nichols’ “Midnight Special,” Seth Rogen’s “Preacher” and聽Irene Taylor Brodsky’s “Beware the Slenderman.”

If you doubt the festival’s power to launch film careers, look no further than this year’s Oscar winner for Best Actress, Brie Larson in “Room.” It was South By Southwest that聽聽Larson with the sensational聽indie gem (2013), which won Best Narrative Feature in 2013.

“South By (Southwest)’s growth mirrors Austin’s growth, (which) mirrors my own growth. I think it’s all kind of intertwined. I think so many Austin people would feel that way, so I’m really proud of what they’ve accomplished,” Linklater said on the red carpet at this year’s event.

Starting Tuesday, get ready for the slice that started it all back in the 1980s, the world-renowned聽 (March 15-20), which has launched countless artists over the years.

草莓传媒’s music expert Marcus Moore 鈥 a regular contributor to 聽magazine 鈥斅爄s down in Austin for the rest of the week, soaking up the tunes and hitting as many concerts as possible.

“You just kind of go down and fall into stuff. If you see a venue playing music, just walk in, because a lot of that stuff is free. …聽Literally, every indie musician is down there聽… You never know who you will see. There will be a lot of D.C. folks down there, folks from L.A. and New York, so I’m just gonna go down and see the next big band, to see if there’s someone else I should be covering,” Moore says.

Which local artists are on his festival calendar?

“There’s an artist named Visto who I’ve been covering for a while now. He does electronic dance music and hip hop. …聽He stays out in Laurel, Maryland. …聽(Also) a聽producer from my hometown, Landover, Maryland, Kev Brown, he’s going down and doing a few showcases. Busta Rhymes is a huge fan. … Asheru is another great one, who actually did the theme song for ‘Boondocks.’ … Kokayi聽is going down, just a bunch of folks I cover locally who I’ve grown to know over the years,” Moore says.

On a slightly more famous level,聽Moore is excited to see rapper Anderson Paak.

“In early January, he released a really excellent album called ‘Malibu.’ Thankfully, I it for Pitchfork and we gave it Best New Music. We gave it an 8.6 out of 10. I think it should have gotten a 9 or a 9.5. It was that good. I’m really looking forward to seeing him. He was on Dr. Dre’s聽recent聽album; he was on six of 16 songs, and he’s a newcomer,” Moore raves.

“I’m also looking forward to this R&B trio from L.A. called KING.聽… They were supposed to come out with a full-length album in 2014. … It聽finally came out in early February 2016, and again, thankfully it for Pitchfork, and now they’re playing the Pitchfork Day Party. … Those two are the top ones where I can’t wait. I’m gonna meet them, hang out with them and then see them perform.”

In this way,聽South By Southwest is a must-hit for musicians and the critics who cover them.

“South By Southwest is huge for the music community because, in theory, that’s where bands go to get discovered. Every music journalist, every taste maker, ever DJ, you name it, is there. And hopefully, there are journalists there who are looking to break out the next artist. South By is huge especially for bands who have been bubbling under the surface,” Moore聽says.

“The Kanyes, the Drakes and all of them, they’re good, they don’t need any more coverage. What about the next wave of artists? And that’s where South By Southwest comes into play.”

If “starchitect” Bjarke Ingels has his way, you’ll have to do the same thing to watch the Washington Redskins play football.

This week, on CBS show “60 Minutes,” Ingels will reveal his design for the new Redskins stadium, a massive bowl that includes the moat for tailgating kayakers.

“The stadium is designed as much for the tailgating, like the pre-game, as for the game itself,” . “Tailgating literally becomes a picnic in a park. It can actually make the stadium a more lively destination throughout the year without ruining the turf for the football game.”

In November, Ingels hinted at his ties with the Redskins, by posting a photo on Instagram of Redskins-branded M&M candies.

This would be his firm’s first NFL stadium.

Dear Yeezus: The sad creative decline of the once-great Kanye /music/2016/02/sad-creative-decline-great-kanye-west/ /music/2016/02/sad-creative-decline-great-kanye-west/#respond Fri, 19 Feb 2016 07:15:37 +0000 http://wtop.com/?p=7063586 Dear Kanye,

Marcus here. I hope all is well with you and yours.

Judging from what I鈥檝e heard recently, things aren鈥檛 going so good.

I mean, that鈥檚 cool, we all go through occasional hardships, but your issues seem totally self-inflicted. And instead of taking responsibility and adjusting your behavior, you lash out publicly and blame everyone else for your recent shortcomings.

In years past, that pain would鈥檝e shone through in the music. In your own way. Remember the early 2000s? We knew those beats before we knew your name. The snap of those drums, the samples you chose. It was equal parts soul and hip-hop. You weren鈥檛 really doing anything new, still you expanded upon the Wu-Tang Clan’s aesthetic and made it something fresh and cool.

Jay Z . Roots bandleader Questlove . We embraced you as the scrappy upstart, the guy with the pink Polo shirt and Louis Vuitton backpack, armed with unwavering bravado. I could relate to that dude; we鈥檝e all felt slighted and underappreciated. You turned an unconventional track like 鈥鈥 into a huge radio hit. And for singer Alicia Keys?! Man, I still play that.

Look, I understand, I鈥檓 creative as well. People like us need to evolve almost daily. We can鈥檛 stand to be stagnant as we push for the next wave, the next chance to be legendary. Each song and story has to be perfect and true. You had this way of making your imperfections shine, even if was technically precise.

I鈥檝e always admired the ambition, the fact that you won by simply being yourself. In a world of superficial pop jams, there was a realness to your art that worked in all circles — from the corner store in Philly, to the streets of your native Chicago. You had this way of making people believe.

. Your new music sounds lost, unfocused and unfinished. The Life of Pablo feels like the ramblings of a man not fully committed to music or life, and your online antics make it tough to stay in your corner. Maybe Twitter just isn鈥檛 your thing. There鈥檚 nothing wrong with that.

Wait, don鈥檛 yell.

There鈥檚 actually a good album in there somewhere, but it鈥檚 so bogged down with lackluster production and cringe-worthy lyrics that your message gets lost. Like that line about Taylor Swift on 鈥淔amous,鈥 for instance: 鈥淚 feel like me and Taylor might still have sex 鈥 I made that b**** famous.鈥 I mean, c鈥檓on dude, you thought that was gonna fly? You鈥檙e married with two kids, but you鈥檙e reopening old wounds. .

Then there鈥檚 the album鈥檚 roll-out. You dubbed it the greatest album ever. Then, naw, it鈥檚 just one of the greatest ever. Call it Swish. Eh, call it Waves. Better yet, call it TLOP. There was confusion over the release date, where to find it, what to make of it. You鈥檙e reportedly $53 million in debt and prior to your 鈥淪NL鈥 performance.

That鈥檚 not entirely your fault, but you gotta understand what you鈥檙e up against. The media wants clicks, fam. Your name generates page views, and you鈥檙e giving credence to the same pubs you claim to despise. Your words hold weight: 鈥鈥 spoke to the heart of a community crushed under the weight of systemic oppression. 鈥淩eal Friends,鈥 a highlight on the new album, feels earnest.

I鈥檓 not saying go back to the old Kanye, but you need to reconnect with what made you whole. Take advice from folks who actually know what constitutes good music. Push your art forward and stop trying to emulate what everyone else is doing. That鈥檚 not you. Such moves make you look out of touch and behind the curve. You鈥檝e always lived beyond that. You鈥檝e always established the next wave.

The Life of Pablo is misguided and far too petulant. Your tantrums have gotten old. You need to grow up and chill out.

Even Jesus rested on the seventh day.聽

Sincerely,

Marcus

PS: I made of your best B-side tracks. Maybe you should check it out? Alright peace.

鈥淭he growth of social media hasn鈥檛 made college admissions a whole new ballgame, but it鈥檚 definitely impacted the rules,鈥 Yariv Alpher, executive director and head of market research for Kaplan Test Prep,聽said in a news release. “What you post online can and may be used in your favor or against you, so it鈥檚 important to think about what you share. When in doubt, the best strategy may be to keep it to yourself.鈥

Of those who look at applicants鈥 social media accounts, 89 percent of admissions officers say they rarely do so. Just 11 percent said they do so often. Twenty-nine percent of admissions officers say they鈥檝e Googled applicants鈥 names. That number has been relatively stable the past two years.

According to Kaplan’s research, admissions officers look at social media for these reasons:

  • Some admissions officer say they will visit an applicant鈥檚 social media page 鈥 often by the applicant鈥檚 own invitation 鈥 if the applicant mentions a special talent, such as being a musician, artist, poet, writer or model.
  • Citation of particularly distinguished or noteworthy awards can trigger an admissions officer鈥檚 online search for independent verification.
  • Some admissions officers say that if an applicant mentions they have a criminal background or a record of disciplinary action, they will do some online digging to get more details.
  • Students applying for special scholarships may come under greater scrutiny: Schools want to ensure those receiving the scholarships are fully deserving, so extra due diligence can come in the form of online checking.
  • Anecdotally, admissions officers say they occasionally get anonymous tips about prospective students pointing them toward inappropriate behavior. They鈥檒l sometimes dig online to see if it has merit.

Kaplan鈥檚 survey also found that social media can cut both ways. Thirty-seven percent of admissions officers say that what they鈥檝e found about an applicant helped their application.

An equal percentage say that what they found hurt an applicant鈥檚 admissions chances.

Positive findings included discovery of undisclosed leadership roles or community service, while negative findings included criminal offenses, photos of drug or alcohol use, racial prejudice or inappropriate behavior.

Kaplan surveyed 387 admissions officers from that nation’s top national, region and liberal arts colleges and universities聽by phone between July and August 2015.

Can 15 minutes really save you money on car insurance? /consumer-news/2016/01/can-15-minutes-really-save-money-car-insurance/ /consumer-news/2016/01/can-15-minutes-really-save-money-car-insurance/#respond Thu, 07 Jan 2016 20:18:19 +0000 http://wtop.com/?p=6369046 WASHINGTON — You鈥檝e seen and heard the ads, like this one from : 鈥淔ifteen minutes can save you 15 percent or more on car insurance.鈥

Car insurance companies make a lot of these claims, but can you really believe them?

Janet Bodnar, editor of magazine, fact-checked different insurance agencies to examine their validity. Geico, she said, is pretty legit with what they say.

鈥淵ou can do this, but you need to meet certain criteria,鈥 Bodnar said on 草莓传媒.

Those who meet Geico鈥檚 criteria qualify for lower insurance premiums.

鈥淚f you put in a little more time, maybe even carving out an hour or so to contact several companies, you might be able to save even more. It鈥檚 worth putting in a little more time.鈥

As for — you know, the commercials with Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers — their 鈥淒iscount Double Check鈥 claim is also accurate. If you meet certain criteria, of course: you鈥檝e been accident free for the past three years, have more than one car and you鈥檙e a new customer.

鈥淵ou can often qualify for discounts even if you don鈥檛 meet that criteria,鈥 Bodnar said.

State Farm and other insurance companies offer discounts to married couples, young motorists who鈥檝e completed a drivers education course and older drivers who鈥檝e completed defensive driving classes.

ads — often featuring saleswoman “Flo” — are accurate as well. There, though, drivers can get discounts if they agree to sign for tracking systems that monitor their habits: whether or not they speed, or drive short distances.

鈥淵ou can save a lot depending on how safe your habits are,鈥 Bodnar said.

comes with a few more caveats. Its ads promise that if you total your vehicle, they鈥檒l reimburse you for the cost of a newer vehicle. It costs $75 to $80 per year on top of your rate to have this service.

鈥淪o it does pay to check the value of your car,鈥 Bodnar said.

She said check the value of your car in , and compare average prices to see if Liberty鈥檚 program is worth it.

鈥檚 Accident Forgiveness program is valid, but like Liberty鈥檚 program, it鈥檒l cost an extra 10 to 19 percent, depending on the number of accidents you have.
