A total of eight people 鈥 including two of the three occupants in the Yukon 鈥 were taken to hospitals for injuries ranging from minor to severe. None of the injuries appear to be life-threatening, Geller said.

The driver of the Yukon, 44-year-old Kevin L. Blyther, of Centreville, and another passenger of the Yukon tried to flee on foot and were caught in minutes.

Blyther was charged with driving while intoxicated, failure to stop at the scene of a crash and driving with a suspended or revoked license. He is being held at the Arlington County Adult Detention Center.

Ratings show DC Public Schools improve despite disparities /dc/2019/11/ratings-show-dc-public-schools-improve-despite-disparities/ /dc/2019/11/ratings-show-dc-public-schools-improve-despite-disparities/#respond Fri, 29 Nov 2019 11:44:45 +0000 /?p=20470376 D.C. Public Schools has released STAR ratings that show how the city’s schools performed during the 2018-2019 school year and most of them are graded higher than last year.

The STAR ratings reflect overall school performance, ranking each school from one to five stars. Although disparities persist among neighborhoods, with wealthier neighborhoods receiving higher ratings, the ratings show some citywide improvement.

Across all eight wards of D.C., 67 DCPS schools received a 3 STAR Rating or higher, and 34 schools received a higher STAR Rating compared to last year, according to a news release from the school district.

“We are really in a good position where there are a lot of data points recently that points in the right direction for us,” Lewis Ferebee, chancellor of DCPS, told 草莓传媒.

A record number of students enrolled in D.C. schools this year, Ferebee said.

While most schools were rated the same or improved since last year, Ferebee acknowledged that some schools rated lower.

“We still had some schools that moved down a notch and we want to understand better how we can support them,” Ferebee said.

Ballou and Anacostia High Schools–both in Ward 8–received a rank of only 1 star. Both schools are “” or resource hubs which take a “whole community approach” in giving students and their families access to employment, health, housing and more, according to the school system.

The STAR ratings are just one way that a school’s success is measured, Ferebee said. He encouraged concerned parents to visit their children’s schools and provide feedback to the school system.

“We see tremendous progress. Obviously, got a ways to go, but we believe that we’re going in the right direction,” Ferebee said.

The crash closed the the Inner Loop of the Capital Beltway for about five hours.

Virginia State Police received a call about a Nissan Leaf heading south in the northbound lanes of I-495 near Braddock Road just after 3 a.m.

Seconds after troopers were dispatched to the scene, the Nissan struck a BMW SUV head on, police said in a news release. The Nissan then ran off the road and hit a guardrail.

“The damage to those two vehicles was pretty substantial as far as debris scattered throughout the lanes,” Corinne Geller, spokesperson for Virginia State Police, told 草莓传媒.

The driver of the BMW and a passenger had exited their car, which was still in the travel lanes, to check on each other and survey the damage when a northbound Honda Civic struck the BMW, injuring both people standing next to it.

“It’s difficult to know what was going through their minds as far as getting out of the vehicle. Most people are in shock at that moment,” Geller said.

Two other cars, also traveling northbound, then crashed into debris from the impact of the first crash. The damage from those two crashes was minor, Geller said.

A total of six people were injured in the crash involving five cars. The driver and passenger of the BMW, who were standing by it when they were hit by the Honda Civic, have life-threatening injuries.

The investigation is ongoing. Police have not yet identified the man charged with the DUI or any of those injured.

Howard Co. victims lost over $50,000 to gift card scams in November /howard-county/2019/11/howard-co-victims-lost-over-50000-to-gift-card-scams-in-november/ /howard-county/2019/11/howard-co-victims-lost-over-50000-to-gift-card-scams-in-november/#respond Fri, 15 Nov 2019 12:23:13 +0000 /?p=20411043 Victims in Howard County, Maryland, have lost over $50,000 in gift card scams in just the first half of November, according to Howard County police.

Police released a video last week explaining how the scams work in an effort to prevent them.

According to the , different kinds of scammers will ask for money via gift cards 鈥 but if someone asks for payment for a service through a gift card, it’s definitely a scam.

A scammer could pretend to be from the IRS, collecting taxes. They could say they’re from tech support and need money to fix your computer. Some scammers have pretended to be from a utility company threatening to cut off power or water if you don’t pay you bill by gift card.

More brazen scammers might even pretend to be a family member with an emergency, the FTC says.

Regardless of their backstory, the scams are all similar: the caller asks you to put money on a popular gift card, such as Amazon. They’ll tell their victim to head to the nearest store and get a card, sometimes staying on the phone with the victim as they go to the store.

Once you purchase the card, they’ll ask for the gift card number and its pin 鈥 which grants them immediate access to your money 鈥 and disappear.

What should you do if you got scammed? The FTC advises you call the company that issued the card right away and tell them the gift card was used in a scam. Ask if the company will refund your money. And tell the store where you bought the gift card as well.

When you do buy gift cards, take steps to protect your money. The FTC recommends you only buy gift cards from sources you know and trust, inspect the card to make sure none of its stickers were removed and keep the receipt.

Wet hot American 鈥 autumn? This year saw the seventh warmest and ninth wettest October on record, according to the National Weather Service.

The hottest day was on Oct. 2, when temperatures soared above both the daily record, which was set in 1986, and the monthly one, which was set in 1941.

“We had a record of 98 degrees on Oct. 2. That’s a record for the date. It was also a record for the month of October, the old one being 96 back in 1941 on Oct. 5,” Storm Team4 meteorologist Matt Ritter said.

The previous daily record was 89 degrees in 1986, according to the National Weather Service.

October is also usually a dry month, but this year, the D.C. area saw the wettest October since 2005. This October’s monthly rainfall was 196% of normal, the National Weather Service said.

“You don’t want to go into October with a drought, but we did. We ended up getting 6.66 inches though for the month 鈥 that absolutely helped the drought situation,” Ritter said.

As Nationals fans lined the streets of D.C. to welcome the World Series champs home in a once-in-a-lifetime victory celebration, one woman was asked a (hopefully) once-in-a-lifetime question.

Jefferson Payne popped the question to his girlfriend Alyssa Hannah during the victory parade and it was captured by dozens of cellphones.

“I was thinking about doing it after the Nationals won the World Series but we ended up watching the game from home so I figured this was the next best choice,” Payne told 草莓传媒 about his proposal plan.

The couple are huge Nats fans and season ticket holders.

It came as a welcome surprise for Hannah, who said she now has an amazing story to tell for the rest of her life.

“I had no idea how I wanted it to happen … we had never talked about it, but it was more than I could have ever imagined,” Hannah said. “He grabbed my hand when I tried to walk away and I saw him fumbling in his pocket with the ring box.

“I couldn’t tell you what he said after that, I just said yes and started crying.”

Overnight Metro collision caused delays, overcrowding Monday /tracking-metro-24-7/2019/10/2-injured-after-2-metro-trains-crash-at-farragut-west-metro-station/ /tracking-metro-24-7/2019/10/2-injured-after-2-metro-trains-crash-at-farragut-west-metro-station/#respond Mon, 07 Oct 2019 22:40:07 +0000 /?p=20255062 Two train operators were treated for injuries that were not life-threatening after their trains were involved in a rear-end collision early Monday morning, Metro said in statement. The trains were returning to the rail yards after completing special post-baseball trips.

One operator had been released from a hospital by 6:30 a.m.

The two trains were traveling eastbound from Foggy Bottom in the direction of Farragut West. They were out of service and being moved to their respective rail yards.

The only person on each train was the operator.

Metro reported that the trains did not derail. No damage to the tunnel or its infrastructure was reported.

Commuters were asked to consider alternatives to Metro all day Monday as delays and single tracking were expected until closing.

According to preliminary findings, one train was stopped outside Farragut West when it was struck in the rear by another train going approximately 11 mph.

Metro said both trains received “zero speed” commands from the signal system due to an occupied track ahead (a train on the platform at Metro Center station). Both trains responded to the signal system and stopped.

“While Metro has not yet identified the root cause of the incident, investigators have found no evidence of a signal system failure and have ruled out ‘loss of shunt’ as a cause,” the transit system said in a statement Monday afternoon.

Metro said in a news release that the investigation is also reviewing “human factors” as a possible cause, and they have interviewed both train operators.

Metro said it has notified the Metropolitan Washington Safety Commission and the National Transportation Safety Board as required.
