Study: Alexandria among nation’s most romantic cities

WASHINGTON — Summer is the time for romance — for long walks around the city and wine at the jazz lounge. And apparently a city in Northern Virginia is one of the most romantic places in the country as National Romance Month in August approaches.

Ahead of the occasion, ProFlowers of the nation’s most romantic cities. In determining which cities are the most romantic, they analyzed:

  • Percentage of the population that is married
  • Romantic restaurants per capita
  • Boutique hotels per capita
  • Public parks per capita
  • Walkability score

Alexandria, Virginia is the fifth most romantic city in the U.S., according to ProFlowers. In particular, Old Town Alexandria has a high concentration of shops and restaurants “lining the enchanting cobblestone streets,” ProFlowers wrote.

Alexandria was the only East Coast city on the list. Sunnyvale — in California’s Bay Area — ranked No. 1 on the list. California cities Torrance, San Francisco, Pasadena and San Diego also ranked on the list.

The Upper Northwest also had a strong showing: Seattle ranked fourth, Portland, Oregon ranked sixth, and Bellevue, Washington ranked eighth. Honolulu, Hawaii ranked No. 2 on the ProFlowers list.
