In fact, Saturday will be the hottest day the region has seen so far in 2019, coming at the tail end of a weeklong heat wave east of the Rockies. Highs are forecast to peak at 96 degrees, and the heat indexes will climb to near the 100 degree mark.

Severe Thunderstorm Warnings

  • All severe thunderstorm warnings in the listening area have expired.

Areas north and east of D.C. could see some looming showers and storms into the late evening.

Earlier, the National Weather Service issued severe thunderstorm warnings and watches in the area.

Locally damaging wind gusts and large hail were the biggest threats in those storms, NWS forecasters said.

It began hailing around 4:20 p.m. in parts of Northern Virginia.

“Another round of storms is possible later this evening,” the weather service said in its Saturday forecast discussion. “The activity (if it holds together) this evening may be more organized since it will be in a more favorable environment.”

Areas north and east of D.C. could see some looming showers and storms into the late evening.

The humidity will begin to drop in the overnight with clear skies.

Most of the D.C. region has been dealing with scorching temperatures over 90 degrees since Tuesday, with a brief respite on Monday before a surge back into the 90s for Independence Day.

While the East Coast roasts, Spain and France are dealing with their worst heat wave in over a decade.

Temperatures in northeastern Spain, where wildfires are raging, reached 106 degrees听this week as parts of Europe recorded their hottest June temperatures in recent memory due to hot air moving north from Africa.

‘Badass’ author Jen Sincero: Go to ‘spiritual gym’ to achieve life goals /life-style/2019/02/badass-author-jen-sincero-go-to-spiritual-gym-to-achieve-life-goals/ /life-style/2019/02/badass-author-jen-sincero-go-to-spiritual-gym-to-achieve-life-goals/#respond Thu, 07 Feb 2019 13:50:12 +0000 /?p=19286949 WASHINGTON听鈥 You’ve probably seen Jen Sincero’s books before. They’re typically a bright, attention-grabbing color, with a funky font that unapologetically reads “You Are a Badass.”

Sincero writes self-help books filled with advice on how to build confidence and habits that will allow readers to meet their goals. Her first book, “You Are a Badass: How to Stop Doubting Your Greatness and Start Living an Awesome Life,” topped the New York Times Bestseller list and has .

Her following book, “You Are a Badass at Making Money,” also made the New York Times Best Seller list.听Her newest novel debuted in December and is titled “You Are a Badass Everyday: How to Keep Your Motivation Strong, Your Vibe High, and Your Quest for Transformation Unstoppable.”

Sincero’s success may come from her stylistic choice to give advice as if she were one of your close friends. While she touches on psychology and human nature like many other authors of self-help books do, Sincero does it with a heaping dose of humor, honesty and warmth.

She talked with 草莓传媒 anchors Shawn Anderson and Hillary Howard Wednesday about her new book, the inspiration behind it, and how you, too, can become (and stay) a certified badass.

“In my book, I talk about going to the ‘spiritual gym,’ which is putting practices into place to keep your motivation strong,” she said.

Sincero said you come into the world doing the things that are true to your heart as a child, but over time, you learn to judge and doubt yourself, which stops you from becoming the true badass you’re meant to be.

To achieve life goals, she said you should spend time attempting to unlearn self-doubt in order to return to that child-like wonderment. But unlearning unhelpful, harmful thoughts is hard work.

Sincero’s advice, detailed in her new book, focuses on how to do that hard work every day.

“Surrounding yourself with people who are really making it happen, reading self-help books, meditating, listening to music that pumps you up” are just some ways to go to the ‘spiritual gym,'” Sincero said.

Of course, just like how going to the regular gym can regularly end up on the unchecked part of your to-do list, going to spiritual gym can become an easily-avoided chore. But similar to your physical-health goals, life goals must be regularly confronted and worked on if you want to see some progress.

“Every day, you read a little bit from a book, or you watch something on YouTube that inspires you, or you call somebody and you map out your to-do list for the day … And it can be just 10 or 15 minutes,” she said.

But going to spiritual gym “is critical,” she said. So, where do you start? Sincero recommends taking a good, hard look at your complaints and excuses.

“If you’re constantly complaining that you never have enough money or that you stink at relationships, or whatever, you can start looking at that and be like, ‘Huh. What if I changed that story?’ Or ‘What if I really questioned that down the roots of it? Is that really true or is that an excuse that I’ve been throwing around for my whole life?'”

And Sincero isn’t just calling readers out on their bluff; her advice to look inward comes from a deeply personal place.

“My big issue was money and I was really struggling well into my 40s, living in a garage,” she said. “I had a lifetime of proof that I sucked at money. Then I did the work that I write about and turned it around.

“I really believe that anybody who feels like it’s too late for them, or they’ve tried everything but it doesn’t work … I really believe that if I can do it, anybody can, because I was committed to being broke for a very long time.”

“You Are a Badass Every Day” can be purchased at any book store or .

Va. Lt. Gov. Justin Fairfax releases statement on Northam controversy /virginia/2019/02/if-northam-resigns-justin-fairfax-would-become-va-s-2nd-black-governor/ /virginia/2019/02/if-northam-resigns-justin-fairfax-would-become-va-s-2nd-black-governor/#respond Sat, 02 Feb 2019 18:27:29 +0000 /?p=19267690 WASHINGTON 鈥 Virginia’s Lt. Gov. Justin Fairfax, who would become acting governor if Northam were to resign or be removed from office, has issued his statement regarding a racist 1984 photo in a medical school yearbook on Northam’s page.

If Northam were to resign 鈥 though he has stated that he intends to stay on until the end of his term听鈥 39-year-old Fairfax would become the commonwealth’s 74th governor and the second black governor in the state’s history after former Gov. Douglas Wilder.

Fairfax issued a statement Saturday afternoon after Northam held a conference asking for forgiveness.

While Fairfax’s statement does not directly call for Northam’s resignation, it does say that Fairfax “cannot condone the actions from (Northam’s) past, that, at the very least, suggest a comfort with Virginia’s darker history of white supremacy, racial stereotyping, and intimidation.”

Fairfax, who is a descendant of slaves and was raised in Northeast D.C., graduated from Duke University and Columbia Law School. Before becoming lieutenant governor, he worked for Tipper Gore during her husband Al Gore’s presidential campaign, and was a staffer in 2004 for then-Sen. John Edwards, a North Carolina Democrat.

Fairfax also spent two years as a federal prosecutor in Alexandria. In 2013, he was awarded the National Bar Association鈥檚 鈥淣ation鈥檚 Best Advocates Award,鈥 .

He was elected as Virginia’s lieutenant governor in 2017 after defeating Republican Jill Vogel.

Fairfax is known for taking a more progressive economic stance than Northam and Attorney General Mark Herring. During his campaign, he stated that he would raise the minimum wage and advocated for more workforce training.

Fairfax has opposed natural gas pipelines proposed in the past. In regards to gun laws, he hopes to ban high capacity magazines, bump stocks and assault-style rifles, as well as supports universal background checks. Fairfax also attacked Vogel for introducing a bill requiring transvaginal ultrasounds for women in order to have an abortion.

The lieutenant governor post is considered a part-time job. Fairfax’s website says that “he currently works as a Litigation Partner … for international law firm Morrison & Foerster LLP.” He lives in Northern Virginia with his wife, Dr. W. Fairfax, DDS, and their son and daughter, Cameron and Carys.

Even if Northam does not resign, as lieutenant governor, Fairfax will automatically become a contender for governor in 2021.

Baltimore tornado is first-ever fatal tornado in colder months on record /baltimore/2018/11/baltimore-tornado-is-first-ever-fatal-tornado-in-colder-months-on-record/ /baltimore/2018/11/baltimore-tornado-is-first-ever-fatal-tornado-in-colder-months-on-record/#respond Sun, 04 Nov 2018 17:45:14 +0000 /?p=18914851 WASHINGTON 鈥 The tornado that touched down in Baltimore, Maryland, Friday night which killed two people and injured another, is the first fatal tornado that occurred in the fall and winter months in the state on record.

Baltimore Fire identified the two victims Saturday as Andrew Lindsay, 54, and Israel Espana Argote.

On Saturday, the National Weather Service confirmed that the EF-1 tornado with an estimated maximum wind speed of 105 mph touched down in Baltimore just before 10 p.m. Friday.

An EF-1 tornado is considered “weak” on the Enhanced Fujita scale.

草莓传媒’s Dave Dildine said it’s “fairly rare to get tornadoes this time of the year.”

“They have occurred in all months, but this time of the year, tornadoes tend to be brief. They tend to spin up quickly, but they can do damage,” he said.

Historically, tornadoes have touched down in the month of November, but only once every seven or eight years, Dildine said.

The last time a tornado touched down in Maryland during the month of November, it was 2010. The tornado hit Baltimore County, less than 10 miles away from where the Friday tornado touched down.

The 2010 tornado was also an EF-1 of similar strength.

Why is it so uncommon? Dildine explained: “This time of the year, we have a lot of wind energy in the atmosphere, as the jet stream sags south. But there isn’t a lot of instability. The sun angle is lower, and so it tends to be more difficult to generate sufficient instability, and that’s one of the ingredients you need for tornado genesis.”

It’s been fairly warm for fall, and Dildine said the warmer weather seen before the cold front on Friday offered “just enough buoyancy for storms to flare up.”

Similar weather setups have been the cause of tornadoes later in the year in the past.

“It’s a good reminder to everyone that it’s always a good idea to be weather aware, no matter what time of the year it is,” Dildine said.

The last tornado fatality in Maryland occurred in April 2002, in La Plata.

Four people were killed by tornadoes in southern Virginia late February 2016, and the most recent tornado-related death in the state happened in Chesterfield in September 2018.

Mayor Muriel Bowser announced Friday that the District will no longer charge sales tax on feminine hygiene products effective as of Monday, Oct. 1.

In her tweet posted Friday afternoon, she wrote, “Because feminine hygiene is a necessity, not a luxury. #PinkTax.”

Women pay more than men for shampoo, razors, shaving cream and other products, consumer retail experts say. Experts refer to it as a 鈥減ink tax.鈥

The new tax exemption includes tampons, sanitary napkins, menstrual cups and “comparable products.”

The post from Bowser says, “DC stands with women and understands that feminine hygiene products are basic necessities!”

The general sales tax in D.C. is now 6 percent as of Monday, increased from 5.75 percent.

On Sept. 9, TaQuan Pinkney, 18, of Southeast D.C., had been walking to the store around 1 p.m. when gunfire erupted in the 2800 block of Stanton Road in Southeast D.C. His mother, Yolanda Pinkney, said he’d run from the gunfire but was killed by a stray bullet.

Police have arrested and charged Elijah Jarmon, 17, of Southeast D.C., with premeditated first-degree murder while armed. He is being charged as an adult.

Police had found Pinkney at Stanton Road suffering from a gunshot wound. He was transported to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Two other victims were located but not injured. Several vehicles were damaged.

Pinkney was a recent Suitland High School graduate, who was set to start classes at the University of D.C. Community College later this year.

Police: Couple found dead in Spencerville home after ‘domestic-related’ shooting /montgomery-county/2018/09/police-couple-found-dead-in-spencerville-home-after-domestic-related-shooting/ /montgomery-county/2018/09/police-couple-found-dead-in-spencerville-home-after-domestic-related-shooting/#respond Sun, 30 Sep 2018 05:35:19 +0000 /?p=18789881 WASHINGTON 鈥 A couple was found dead with gunshot wounds to their bodies in their Spencerville home in Montgomery County, Maryland, Saturday night following what police described as a “domestic-related event.”

The 56-year-old man and 53-year-old woman were found around 8 p.m. in the 1500 block of Peach Orchard Road with apparent gunshot wounds, police said, after an adult family member who also lives in the home notified police.

A firearm was recovered at the scene.

“Preliminary investigation has revealed that the deceased were involved in a relationship and lived together in the home,” Captain Paul Starks of the Montgomery County Police Department said.

Police are unsure of the motive, but are investigating the shooting as a “domestic-related event,” Starks said.

“We don’t believe there is any danger to the public at this time,” he said.

Starks said there are no records of police previously responding to the home.

He said police expect to release more information, including the identities of the deceased, Sunday morning after notifying family.

Below is a map of where police say the bodies were found.
