WASHINGTON 鈥 Most beachgoers want nothing more than to slather on some sunscreen and plop down on a blanket all day. But more and more, people are heading to the beach so their kids can go to summer camp or play in tournaments at the same time.
It鈥檚 something Ocean City has been trying to capitalize on in recent years.
Every summer the Ocean City Recreation and Parks Department offers more than 30 different summer camps that try to appeal to a wide variety of interests. Most of them run Monday through Thursday, typically from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
鈥淲e do encourage people to plan their vacation around their children鈥檚 participation in our camp programs,鈥 said Susan Petito, the Recreation and Parks Director in Ocean City. 鈥淲e try to set them up so they work well for a family who鈥檚 on vacation.鈥
Most of the camps are held at Northside Park. There鈥檚 a camp for nearly every sport your kid might play, but there鈥檚 also camps that focus on art, theater and music.
And of course, some camps take advantage of the unique access to water through kayaking and fishing. A new nature camp takes kids around the coastal bays there. There鈥檚 also a boogie board camp taught by professional board riders (the town provides your kid with a board if you don鈥檛 have one) as well as the long-running Junior Beach Patrol camp.
鈥淛unior Beach Patrol was developed with the idea of giving kids who were interested in possibly being involved with the beach patrol someday a little taste of what that鈥檚 all about,鈥 said Petito. 鈥淵ou see those incredible athletes sitting on the beach stands and you wonder what does it take to be a member of the beach patrol?鈥
That camp, led by Butch Arbin who heads the town鈥檚 team of lifeguards, can often help someone get their foot in the door once they鈥檙e old enough to join the beach patrol.
But it鈥檚 not just families going to the beach anymore, sometimes it鈥檚 entire teams and their families.
In recent years the sports tourism industry has exploded around Ocean City, as the surrounding area becomes a popular destination for sports tournaments.
鈥淎 lot of families basically take their vacations around their children鈥檚 participation in various sports,鈥 said Donna Abbott, the Ocean City Tourism Director.
The town has taken notice.
鈥淚n the last five years we鈥檝e noticed the trends and we鈥檝e wanted to work toward achieving more in that area of marketing,鈥 said Abbott.
For years now the town has hosted lacrosse tournaments for both kids and adults coinciding with the annual fishing tournaments too. But what seemed to bring things in focus was a massive girl鈥檚 softball tournament that began a few years ago.
鈥淎nd that鈥檚 bringing almost 400 teams over a three-week period in July. And those families are coming from 12 states and Canada,鈥 said Abbott. 鈥淭hey want to go places where there are also amenities such as the boardwalk and amusement parks so they can make a vacation in addition to playing their games. So we feel like we have the right destination and the right location to be able to expand upon that.鈥
Northside Park and the Convention Center are able to host basketball and volleyball tournaments, while on the beach they鈥檙e doing surfing competitions, as well as beach volleyball and sand soccer tournaments. In all, thousands of teams that play a wide variety of sports are visiting the beaches with their families every year now.
鈥淚t鈥檚 a market that鈥檚 relatively untapped for us in terms of expanding, so we want to do more of that,鈥 said Abbott. 鈥淲e鈥檙e working with our neighboring counties 鈥 they have more land than we have, they have more fields than we have. We offer the amenities, the hotel rooms, the attractions, the beach, of course. So, we can partner with our regional counterparts to bring more of that here.鈥
