WASHINGTON 鈥� A car recall only works if the owner takes the car in and gets it fixed, and the number of owners not doing it has soared.
Centerville, Virginia-based Carfax says more than 63 million recalled vehicles are on the road unrepaired right now, a 34 percent increase in the past year.
“Carfax, manufacturers and the government are working together to make it easier for drivers to get accurate information and timely alerts about open recalls,” said Carfax spokesman Larry Gamache.
“It may be inconvenient, but people driving recalled cars should make getting them fixed a high priority,” he said.
It is a family safety issue, too.
Vehicles most likely to have unfixed recalls area minivans and SUVs, Carfax reported.
Carfax provides used vehicle information for both owners and potential buyers, including details on any recalls affecting the vehicle. Its database includes more than 17 billion vehicle history records.
