WASHINGTON 鈥� May saw a drop in the unemployment rate in Maryland while it stayed the same in Virginia.
Maryland’s unemployment rate fell from 4.3 percent in April to 4.2 percent in May, which is also down from 4.3 percent in May of last year. The unemployment rate in Virginia stayed at 3.8 percent, but it is down from 4.0 percent from on year ago.
The District’s unemployment rate ticked up in May from 5.9 percent to 6 percent.
Unemployment rates fell in nine states in May, rose in three and were stable in 28, according to the Labor Department’s Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Colorado held on to the title of lowest state unemployment rate in May, at just 2.3 percent, followed closely by 2.5 percent in North Dakota.
Alaska and New Mexico had the highest state unemployment rates in May, at 6.7 percent and 6.6 percent respectively.
