DC chooses contractors for new Douglass Memorial Bridge project

WASHINGTON — Watsonville, California-based Granite Construction Inc. and Atlanta-based Archer Western have been awarded the South Capitol Street Corridor Phase 1 design-build contract by the District Department of Transportation.

The joint venture project is worth $441 million.

The contract award comes more than four years after the District .

Granite and Archer Western will be responsible for the replacement of the existing Frederick Douglass Memorial Bridge over the Anacostia River. The project includes the construction of two new approach ovals and the reconstruction of a portion of Interstate 295 adjacent to the new bridge.

The bridge will have six lanes, and improved bicycle and pedestrian access when it is finished.

Granite Construction said the bridge project is expected to be completed by December 2021.

The bridge and South Capitol Street corridor project are part of the much larger 30-year, $10 billion .
