WASHINGTON 鈥� Lidl, the Washington area’s newest discount grocer, now delivers in Northern Virginia.
Lidl has partnered with online grocery delivery company Shipt for home deliveries from Lidl stores in Ashburn, Manassas, Woodbridge and Fredericksburg.
The Shipt model is based on an annual membership fee with free delivery for orders over $35. The Shipt membership fee is normally $99 a year. It says new Shipt members who sign up for Lidl delivery in Northern Virginia will receive an annual membership for $49.
Through its partnership with Northern Virginia Lidl stores, shoppers can choose a one-hour delivery window, note preferences, and pay for their order, all within the Shipt app. Shipt’s shoppers select, bag and delver items.
Shipt is also hiring in the area.
Rival Aldi notes on its website that home delivery is “coming soon” to the Washington area through a partnership with Shipt rival Instacart.
Lidl, which has thousands of stores in Europe, began its Washington area expansion last year and in 2015, picked Crystal City for its North American headquarters, where it employs more than 700. It also has distribution centers in Spotsylvania County, Virginia, and Cecil County, Maryland.
Lidl has said it plans more than 100 stores on the East Coast eventually.
