Washington Monument to remain closed Friday

WASHINGTON — The Washington Monument will remain closed Friday after an elevator problem .

A cable broke loose from the elevator around 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, which caused the elevator to stop and sent the one employee on board to walk down from about the 500th foot level, said National Park Service spokesman Mike Litterst. No one was injured in the incident.

The elevator repair closed the monument Wednesday and Thursday too. The National Park Service tweeted Thursday the monument would be closed Friday “for continued maintenance work on the elevator.”

The after its elevator failed twice in 12 hours. It was the latest in a long list of elevator problems that have closed the monument this year.
