WASHINGTON 鈥� Hours after police say a man was shot and robbed walking to his car, a community leader hit the streets of Northeast D.C. to reassure her neighbors and encourage them to help cut crime.
It was Monday morning when the man was shot on the 800 block of 21st Street NE, and the D.C. police are still looking for two suspects in the case.
The shooting happened in Kathy Henderson鈥檚 neighborhood, which she represents on Advisory Neighborhood Commission 5D.
鈥淣o one should be robbed at gunpoint and shot leaving their home,鈥� Henderson said,
So on Monday night, Henderson knocked on doors and reminded residents to help do their part 鈥� which includes helping to keep the neighborhood clean.
鈥淰isible signs of neglect 鈥� it鈥檚 like rolling out a welcome mat for criminals,鈥� Henderson said.
Joined by police officers, Henderson reminded residents to keep valuables out of sight and to work with police in solving crimes.
鈥淓veryone has to get involved,鈥� Henderson said.
She said she would also like to see every home in her neighborhood equipped with security cameras. D.C. residents who buy cameras can .
鈥淚f the word gets out that we are a community with safety cameras, [criminals] won鈥檛 target us for anything; they鈥檒l move someplace else,鈥� Henderson said.
