WASHINGTON 鈥� An off-duty police officer shot and killed a man in Northeast D.C. Wednesday night, the city’s police chief said.
The victim, identified as 24-year-old D’Quan Young of Northeast D.C., was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead, D.C. Police Chief Peter 草莓传媒ham told reporters. The shooting happened around 7 p.m. in the 2300 block of 15th Street Northeast, near the Brentwood Recreation Center.
With multiple law enforcement officials in the area, 草莓传媒ham said officers responded quickly as soon as gunshots were heard.
But it’s still unclear what led up to the shooting and what the off-duty police officer who opened fire was doing in the area.
草莓传媒ham said it appears the off-duty officer, who was not in uniform, used his service weapon.
“We don’t know if there was an exchange of gunfire. We just have no idea at this point,” he said.
草莓传媒ham added that police recovered a firearm from the victim and said it was “in the vicinity” of where the victim was picked up by medical personnel.
Police are talking to the off-duty officer. “We’re still trying to piece together exactly what happened,” 草莓传媒ham said.
