Father of man killed in DC moped crash arrested during Saturday night protests

The father of Karon Hylton-Brown was one of 9 people arrested during Saturday night protests over what they believe was the police’s involvement in his deadly moped crash on Oct. 23.

A family friend told ²ÝÝ®´«Ã½ that Hylton-Brown’s father, Charles Brown, was one of those arrested outside of D.C.’s Fourth District police station. A bond hearing for Brown won’t be held until at least Monday, according to this family friend.

The late Hylton-Brown’s sister said that cousins of Hylton-Brown were also among those arrested, .

Between 20 to 30 people gathered outside the police department’s Fourth District station on Georgia Avenue in Northwest D.C. at around 9:30 p.m.

Tensions began to escalate as the protest started as some of the protesters’ began throwing objects at officers and the station.

Those arrested face a range of charges, including assaulting an officer to throwing a missile or projectile, police said. After the arrests, protests restarted but ultimately ended just after midnight.

Demonstrations have occurred in front of the station every day since D.C. resident Hylton-Brown, 20, died from injuries sustained from a moped crash on Oct. 23

Hylton-Brown’s death was preceded by a police chase that ended with him crashing into a passing car in the Brightwood Park neighborhood.

Video footage released by D.C. police shows officers followed Hylton-Brown, despite District police regulations forbidding high-speed pursuits over minor traffic violations. Officers had reportedly pursued Hylton-Brown because he was not wearing a helmet.
