The driver of a utility van is dead and his son, who was riding with him, is critically injured after his vehicle collided with a Metrobus in Southeast D.C., early Sunday morning. At least five people on the bus were also injured.
Metro spokesperson Sherri Ly said the van struck the bus at around 1:20 a.m. Sunday near the intersection of Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue and Highview Place SE.
Officials say the driver and his son were trapped in the van until emergency response units could remove them.
The driver of the van was pronounced dead on the scene and his son, a minor, was taken to the hospital with critical injuries, police said.
The name of the deceased van driver and his son have not been released.
Ly told 草莓传媒 that the Metrobus driver and four passengers on the bus suffered minor injuries and were taken to the hospital.
D.C. Fire and EMS stated that the van was leaking gas on the roadway and hazmat units were requested to clean up the scene. The area was closed to traffic for about four hours while the fire department cleaned up the fuel spill, police said.
Police say the cause and events leading up to the crash are still being investigated.
