Skrilla said the connected to his drill rap hit almost didn鈥檛 happen.
His 2024 release, 鈥淒oot Doot (6-7),鈥� became popular in TikTok videos with last year. Now, young people all over the world are shouting the non-sensical phrase seemingly non-stop, often pairing it with an up-and-down arm motion with upward palms.
Skrilla said he nearly didn’t publish the song and considered it 鈥渁 throwaway.鈥� He never saw any aspect of it becoming popular, much less inspiring a global phenomenon.
“It didn鈥檛 even cross my mind,鈥� he told The Associated Press. 鈥淚t was an unreleased song. I had just leaked it and it went crazy off of a leaked song. I leaked it because I didn鈥檛 really have too much faith in it. I didn鈥檛 really care too much about the song.鈥�
The initial popularity caused him to officially release it in 2025, and now, 鈥�6-7鈥� is everywhere. Athletes use it to celebrate big plays. It’s popular in classrooms, at sporting events and at his concerts.
He said it all has caused him to view his work differently.
鈥淣ow when I鈥檓 recording in the studio, when I鈥檓 making a song and I feel like I don鈥檛 like it, I force myself to like it,鈥� he said. 鈥淎nd when I鈥檓 making a song and I鈥檓 like ready to be over, done with the song, I鈥檒l finish it just cause 鈥� just out of the respect for 鈥�6-7.鈥欌��
Skrilla said 鈥�6-7鈥� means whatever people want it to mean, and he loves the joy the trend has brought to people. But anything popular draws scrutiny. He said he鈥檚 heard it all when it comes to what ‘6-7’ means.
鈥淚鈥檓 not a bad person,” he said. “And 鈥�6-7鈥� is not a demonic cult or whatever people be making up 鈥� these stories, these crazy stories people be making up. It鈥檚 just crazy. Yeah, it鈥檚 a lot of crazy stories about 鈥�6-7鈥� and demonic and devil worshiping, and I鈥檓 not a devil worshiper at all either, as well. And 鈥�6-7鈥� isn鈥檛 a cult.鈥�
Despite the critics, Skrilla is excited that the emergence of the trend at college and pro basketball games has kept it fresh. And he鈥檚 glad that it has made him more visible 鈥� even if it has outgrown him.
鈥淓verything that 鈥�6-7鈥� has brought to me excites me,鈥� he said. 鈥淓very door it opens excites me.鈥�
