WASHINGTON 鈥� While many area middle-schoolers are spending the summer at the pool or the mall, at least some are making a difference in their community.
Seventy-five middle school students recently spent several hours picking corn at Chandler Farms in Montross, Virginia, and Parker Farms in Colonial Beach, Virginia.
The students, connected to Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Annandale, collected more than 10,000 pounds of corn, which will go to a food bank in Manassas.
Vince Cannava, program director for the , said about 400 people will be helped in about a dozen communities.
Left in the husk to keep it from getting damaged, the corn was placed in milk crates and sent to food banks in Shenandoah, Winchester City, Arlington, Alexandria City, Rappahannock County, Warren County, Madison County, Orange County, Fairfax County and Loudoun County.
All the students who volunteered are part of a faith-formation program at Holy Spirit Catholic Church.
