WASHINGTON – A bipartisan group of governors, including Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe and Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan, said Tuesday that they鈥檙e glad to see some U.S. Senators 鈥渟tand up鈥� to the GOP health care plan and called on Congress to include them in efforts to improve the insurance system.
The eleven governors issued a statement warning that it would be a mistake to get rid of the Affordable Care Act 鈥� better known as Obamacare 鈥� without working to create something better.
鈥淭he Senate should immediately reject efforts to 鈥榬epeal鈥� the current system and replace sometime later,鈥� the governors said in a statement. 鈥淭his could leave millions of Americans without coverage. The best next step is for both parties to come together and do what we can all agree on: fix our unstable insurance markets.鈥�
The statement notes that Congress should press ahead with efforts to make health insurance more affordable, adding, 鈥渨e are pleased to see a growing number of senators stand up for this approach.鈥�
McAuliffe, in an interview with 草莓传媒, said it鈥檚 time to 鈥減ut politics aside鈥� and develop a bipartisan approach to reforming health care. He also said lawmakers should tap into the governors鈥� expertise, to help bring down costs.
鈥淲e can save a lot of money,鈥� McAuliffe said. 鈥淲ith generic drugs and other areas, and in the Medicare program, we can save billions once someone gets out of a hospital 鈥� do bundled services. There are so many things that we could do to save this program money.鈥�
McAuliffe said it鈥檚 time to 鈥済et the governors at the table because we run these programs in our states.鈥�
McAuliffe is one of five Democratic governors who signed the bipartisan statement released Tuesday. Hogan is one of five Republicans who signed the letter 鈥� among them former presidential candidate Ohio Gov. John Kasich.
Alaska Gov. Bill Walker, who鈥檚 an Independent, also joined the statement.
Several governors had called on their peers to release a bipartisan statement on the health bill at the recent meeting of the National Governors Association. But they held off, due to various disagreements.
The other governors who released the statement on Tuesday include: Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper, Montana Gov. Steve Bullock, Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards, Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval, Massachusetts Gov. Charles Baker, Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Wolf, Vermont Gov. Phil Scott.
