How to tap into mindful breathing to face a busy lifestyle

WASHINGTON 鈥 You breathe more than 900 times per hour, but how often do you think about your breath?聽 Breathing can have a calming effect on how you handle daily challenges.

Therapeutic yoga teacher Mary Beth Cully says a simple breath can change your perspective and how you look at situations.

鈥淚f you focus on breathing deep 鈥 full inhale and a complete exhale 鈥 we really cannot multitask, it鈥檚 kind of an oxymoron 鈥 you don鈥檛 multitask very well,鈥 says Cully. 鈥淚f you 鈥 simply say to yourself, 鈥業鈥檓 breathing in, I鈥檓 breathing out,鈥 that鈥檚 where your mind stays.鈥

Cully says mindful breathing is something worth trying during stressful commutes.

鈥淲hen I drive my car, instead of having to hit my horn because I want to go first or that person wants to get in front of me and this is a problem 鈥 I鈥檓 going to take that breath, and I鈥檓 going to let that person go, and I鈥檓 going to be OK with that,鈥 she explains.
