Monogamy has changed, says Andrea Syrtash, a relationship expert and dating columnist.

鈥淲e used to get married because we needed to, and now we get married because we want to 鈥� so the paradigm is very different. We have options now, and not everyone wants to be partnered in a monogamous long-term relationship.鈥�

Syrtash says some people may be scared of monogamy because they are seeing both stability and excitement, and don鈥檛 realize they can coexist.

鈥淢onogamy teaches us about partnership, and how to compromise some of our needs in favor of someone else鈥檚 needs,鈥� she says.
