WASHINGTON — December 26Ìýis known in several countries as Boxing Day, but in Washington D.C., it is the day theÌýD.C. Trifecta was accomplished in sports for the first time in 32 years.
The three most major professional sports teams inÌýD.C.: the Redskins, Capitals and Wizards all won their respective games on the same day. The last time this happened was on Dec. 17, 1983.
Beginning the trifecta,Ìýthe Washington Wizards beat the Brooklyn Nets Saturday evening to move to .500 on the season with a final score of 111-96.
TheÌýWashington Capitals hosted the Montreal Canadiens at the Verizon Center. The Caps and Habs both came into the contest with 105 points. But the Caps ultimatelyÌýprevailed, winning 3-1 for their seventhÌýstraight victory.
The Washington Redskins topped the day off by defeating the Philadelphia Eagles 38-24 to earn the NFC Division title for the first time since 2012.

The Redskins will now host a playoff game against the fifthÌýseed in the NFC. Kirk Cousins threw for four touchdownsÌýandÌýhas eight in his last two games with no interceptions.
Although not part of the D.C. trifecta,ÌýÌýVirginia Tech won 55-52 in the Independence Bowl in Frank Beamer’s final game as head coach of the Hokies.
