WASHINGTON — In front of the White House, hundreds of people filled Lafayette Square on Sunday,聽to protest President Donald Trump’s ban on travelers from seven predominantly Muslim nations.

Carrying signs, cheering and reciting a variety of chants — from 鈥淭his is what democracy looks like,鈥 and 鈥淣o hate, no fear, refugees are welcome here,鈥 to鈥淲e will not go away, welcome to your ninth day鈥 — the diverse crowd chanted and cheered in support of Muslims and other refugees.

Vocal and expressive, the crowd was alternately solemn and warm in expressing peaceful solidarity with refugees affected by Trump’s order.

鈥淚 think my faith compels me to be here and speak out for those who can鈥檛 speak out for themselves at the moment,鈥 said Thomas Smith, who is a member of the Episcopal Church.

President Trump’s executive order blocks refugees from entering the United States for 120 days, and temporarily bans citizens from seven majority-Muslim countries from entry.

Maryam Kanna is a 24-year-old Iraqi-American who lives in Arlington, Virginia. She calls the executive order “totally alienating.” 聽Kanna says she worries about her uncle, a British citizen, and her cousins in Canada, who may no longer be able to enter the U.S.

Other聽demonstrators 聽outside the White House were willing to speak with 草莓传媒, but did not want to give their full names.

A woman who identified herself as Sonia from Sterling, Virginia., said she doesn鈥檛 recognize what she sees in the United States right now.

鈥淢y dad鈥檚 a green card holder, and granted, the country he鈥檚 from is not on the ban list, but it really could easily be,” she said. “This is not the America I was raised in.鈥

Antti, who is originally from Finland, said he鈥檚 been in the United States more than 10 years. He held a sign that said 鈥淚 am an immigrant too. Will I be next?鈥

鈥淚 just feel like I have to do my part coming out here and standing up for this,” he said. “If this is where it starts, we just don鈥檛 know where it might lead, so we have to nip it in the bud.鈥

Nathan attended the march to support his parents, who were refugees from Vietnam.

鈥淚 believe that everyone should have the same opportunity as my parents, as political refugees, refugees of war and violence.鈥

Miguel, who is originally from Venezuela and now a U.S. citizen, said he owes his life to the United States. He attended Sunday鈥檚 protest because he wanted to exercise his First Amendment right to free speech, 鈥渁nd that鈥檚 something that they won鈥檛 take away from me.鈥

Protesters even gathered outside聽聽Trump International Hotel in Washington, D.C.

Protests were also reported in St. Louis, Minneapolis; Cleveland; Columbus, Ohio; and Portland, Maine.

Omar Al Tammeemi was among more than 100 protesters gathered at the international arrivals terminal at Dulles International Airport. It was the second day of protests at Dulles and at airports across the country.

Al Tammeemi said聽he was worried he may not be able to see his wife and young son who are in Iraq following Trump’s immigration order.

He said he worked as a translator for the U.S. military in Iraq from 2008 to 2013 and came to the U.S. afterward on a special refugee visa. He says his wife, who holds a green card, and their young son, a U.S. citizen, are in Iraq visiting her sick mother.

Al Tammeemi says his wife is “scared to come.”

Four Democratic members of Congress who attended the demonstration said they were turned away by Customs and Border Patrol officers at the scene when they sought a meeting about whether people were being held unlawfully.

Hundreds also 聽gathered at Baltimore-Washington International Airport, chanting “no hate, no fear, immigrants are welcome here.”

Social media reports said crowds were spilling out of the international terminal.
