WASHINGTON 鈥� House Majority Whip Steve Scalise underwent another surgery Thursday for wounds he sustained in a shooting at the congressional baseball game practice last month, MedStar Washington Hospital Center announced Thursday.
The Louisiana congressman and third-ranking House Republican underwent surgery for the management of deep tissue infection related to his bullet wounds, the hospital said on behalf of the Scalise family.
Scalise is in fair condition after recently being in serious condition. He will need 鈥渃areful monitoring to see if and when further interventions are necessary,鈥� the hospital鈥檚 statement said.
Scalise and four other people were injured June 14 when a gunman opened fire on a practice in Alexandria, Virginia. U.S. Capitol Police and other officers returned fire and killed the gunman, 66-year-old James Hodgkinson.
Scalise was struck in the hip and the bullet tore into blood vessels, bones and internal organs. Doctors said the 51-year-old congressman was near death when he arrived at the hospital.
