1 person in life-threatening condition after kayaks split from boat in Potomac River

One person suffered life-threatening injuries Sunday after three kayaks were separated from boats and swept up in the Potomac River.

Montgomery County Fire and Rescue spokesperson Pete Piringer said the incident happened near the Great Falls area and that the individuals self-rescued onto the Virginia shoreline.

First responders with the MCFRS and Fairfax County Fire and Rescue both reported to the scene around 2 p.m.

Of the three people who fell into the water, one person suffered life-threatening injuries and was unconscious at the time, Piringer said. The individual was transferred by boat to get medical care.

An investigation into the incident is ongoing.
