WASHINGTON 鈥 The Democrat who wins Maryland鈥檚 upcoming primary will likely represent the state鈥檚 4th District.
鈥淚t鈥檚 hard to imagine a scenario where a Republican can make a credible run in November,鈥 said Todd Eberly, political science chairman at St. Mary鈥檚 College of Maryland.
Of the 10 candidates running for Donna Edwards鈥 congressional seat, six are Democrats. Two of the race鈥檚 three front-runners 鈥 former Maryland gubernatorial candidate and former Prince George鈥檚 County State鈥檚 Attorney 鈥 have name recognition.
Ivey is running a new ad that says he鈥檚 gotten an endorsement from former U.S. attorney general Eric Holder.
鈥淭hese endorsements can matter, but we鈥檝e almost reached a point where the endorsements are canceling each other out,鈥 Eberly said. 鈥淭hey all have what I say are a respectable slate of influential groups or people who are endorsing them.鈥
Del. has been endorsed by The Washington Post.
鈥淣ame recognition is always important, especially 鈥 when advertising doesn鈥檛 have the effect it used to because people can so easily avoid ads,鈥 Eberly said.
Brown is endorsing Edwards for Senate, which Eberly sees as a strategic move.
鈥淚 think he鈥檚 in a position where he believes he needs to be attached to someone who is absolutely going to clean up in [Prince George鈥檚] County to help pull him over the finish line,鈥 he said.
