Rescue crews found the body of Gideon McKean, the 8-year-old grandson of former Maryland Lt. Gov. Kathleen Kennedy Townsend, on Wednesday afternoon after a extended search.
The recovery comes two days after rescuers found the body of his mother, Maeve Kennedy Townsend McKean.
Gideon McKean’s body was found at about 1:40 p.m. in 25 feet of water, about 2.3 miles south of his grandmother’s residence in Shady Side, Maryland, the Maryland Natural Resources Police said in a statement.
The search started last Thursday, after authorities responded to a report of two people on a canoe in the Chesapeake Bay who appeared to be overtaken by strong winds.
Kennedy Townsend, who served two terms as Maryland’s lieutenant governor, is the eldest daughter of the late Sen. Robert F. Kennedy, and niece of the late President John F. Kennedy.
Maeve McKean, 40, a public health and human rights lawyer, served as executive director of the Georgetown University Global Health Initiative. Her husband, David, said in a Facebook post Friday that their family was self-quarantining in an empty house owned by the former lieutenant governor, hoping to give their kids more space to run around than they had at their home in D.C. and that the two had gone out in the canoe to retrieve a ball from the water.
“Please continue to keep their family in your prayers as they mourn this devastating loss,” Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan said on Twitter Wednesday afternoon.
