WASHINGTON 鈥斅燙rowded bus stops. Jammed commuter route. Fenced off Metrorail stations. It was a commute that few could ever forget.

A Metro employee shuts down escalators to the McPherson Square Station in D.C., Wednesday, March 16, 2016. Metro shut down for a full-day for an emergency safety inspection of its third-rail power cables. The Federal Transit Administration announced a safety inspection blitz of its own focusing on rail yard safety, red light signals and track integrity.
