Final Four newbie Virginia Tech falls to LSU 79-72

The Virginia Tech women’s basketball team lost Friday night’s Final Four matchup against LSU, losing to the Tigers 79-72.

This Final Four was a first for Virginia Tech and coach Kenny Brooks, who was set to match wits with LSU coach Kim Mulkey who won three national championships in four trips to the Final Four with Baylor, beating him by 42 points the last time the two met in March Madness.

The No. 1 seeded Hokies got off to a slow start but were leading at halftime 34-32, then topping the Tigers again in the third quarter 59-50. However, things started slipping away in the fourth. In the final quarter, LSU scored 29 to Virginia Tech’s 13.

Senior Keyana Traylor came off the bat swinging with an 11-0 run and scoring nine second-quarter points. Senior Elizabeth Kitley continued the Hokies lead with 16 points and 9 rebounds by the third quarter.

On thing the Hokies can go away happy with — in addition to reaching the Final Four — Junior Georgia Amoore set another Hokie-first by scoring the most three-pointers in any NCAA game — ever.

For LSU, Alexis Morris lead the way and contributed 27 points, helping the Tigers move on to the NCAA National championship game on Sunday where they will face the winner of Iowa and South Carolina.
