George Mason Final Four star Tony Skinn hired as hoops coach

FAIRFAX, Va. (AP) 鈥 Tony Skinn, who helped lead 11th-seeded George Mason to the Final Four during as a player in 2006, was hired Thursday to coach men’s basketball at the school.

Skinn replaces , who left George Mason for Providence after departed Providence for Georgetown.

鈥淭ony Skinn is the right man for this moment in Mason鈥檚 basketball program,鈥 university President Gregory Washington said in the news release announcing the hiring. 鈥淗is coaching style will galvanize our student-athletes and his connection to our finest hour on the court is sure to electrify our alumni and fans.”

Skinn was a starting guard for the Patriots 17 years ago when they picked up a series of surprising wins 鈥 including against UConn in the regional final in Washington, about 20 miles from campus 鈥 to make the semifinals at the NCAA Tournament.

George Mason’s coach at the time, Jim Larra帽aga, is now at Miami and .

Skinn was most recently an assistant coach at Maryland. He also has worked at Ohio State, Seton Hall and Louisiana Tech.

鈥淚t鈥檚 an unbelievable feeling to step back on campus,鈥 Skinn said. 鈥淚鈥檝e had some of my greatest memories here and I鈥檓 looking forward to making new ones with our fans and our community.鈥

Skinn played his high school basketball at Takoma Academy and graduated as the school鈥檚 all-time leading scorer.

After his collegiate career at George Mason, Skinn played for Nigeria in the 2012 Summer Olympics.
