Pedestrian couple in their 70s struck by car on Sunday

KENSINGTON, Md. – Montgomery County Police say a couple in their 70s was hit by a car that drove onto a sidewalk in Kensington.

It happened about 10:05 a.m. Sunday on Summit Avenue. Police say a car driven by 68-year-old Mary Ann Harrington of Germantown was traveling north when it left the road and hit two people on the sidewalk.

The pedestrians, 77-year-old John Richard Whalen and his wife, 74-year-old Dorothy Whalen, both of Kensington, were taken to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Harrington, the driver, was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The accident is under investigation.
