WASHINGTON – Those taking Metro to the Nationals’ home opener Thursday should expect big crowds since the game is a .

While the Navy Yard station on the Green Line — the closest station to the ballpark — will be busy, Metro also warns about crowds at key transfer stations to the Green Line.

“Folks should expect Gallery Place to be especially crowded,” says Metro chief spokesperson Dan Stessel.

L’Enfant Plaza also is a busy transfer point during and after Nationals games.

The game is expected to end around the same time the afternoon rush picks up.

“The Green Line will be saturated with as much service as we can provide,” says Stessel.

He says there will be longer, eight-car trains to handle extra crowds.

To avoid long lines at the farecard machines after the game, Metro says to make sure farecards or Smartrip cards have enough value left for a return trip.
