Gas prices down ahead of July 4 holiday

WASHINGTON – Gas prices have dropped, ahead of the July 4 holiday next week.

The latest ²ÝÝ®´«Ã½ Pain in the Gas Survey shows the average price of a gallon of regular gasoline is $3.44, down 9 cents from last week.

Mid-grade gas is down 4 cents, to $3.69 a gallon. Premium is down 5 cents to $3.78 a gallon. Diesel is down 8 cents to $3.85 a gallon.

The average for regular fuel this week is cheapest in Virginia, where regular is down to $3.34 a gallon. The average is $3.43 a gallon in Maryland. In the District gas is $3.55 a gallon.

Typically, gas prices drop the week before the July 4 holiday. Last year, prices dropped 19 cents to an average of $3.63 a gallon. For comparison, gas in February 2011 averaged $3.22 a gallon.
