WASHINGTON – Maryland’s comptroller is issuing a warning about a scam that targets many involved in the military.
Emails are being sent to those currently servicing in the armed forces, military retirees and civilian employees of the military. They say those getting disability compensation from the Veterans Affairs Department may be eligible for additional funds from the IRS.
The email appears to come from Defense Finance and Accounting Services. It asks for copies of Veterans Affairs award letters, income tax returns, 1099-Rs and Retiree Account Statements. Then it says the documents should be sent to a colonel in Florida.
Maryland Comptroller Peter Franchot says while an unexpected windfall may sound appealing, it is a scam. He’s urging Marylanders not to take the bait.
