Metro police warn cyclists to upgrade locks after rash of thefts

WASHINGTON – Metro Transit Police handed out bike locks to people Friday morning at the Grosvenor station in Bethesda, warning them to keep a close eye on their bikes.

The warning comes after a rash of thefts near Metro stations. The recent spike in thefts includes at least 20 stolen bikes in the past few weeks, police say.

Officers even caught two thieves in the act, in the District near Anacostia.

Part of the problem is some riders aren’t using locks that are strong enough to deter bike thieves, police say. Cable locks aren’t strong enough either and can be cut in half.
