WASHINGTON – Mopeds and scooters are a popular option in D.C., where parking is always limited and gas prices are on the rise.
But new rules could be coming if a crackdown requested by Mayor Vincent Gray goes forward and is approved by the D.C. Council.
Potential rules would include a requirement for all scooters and mopeds to be licensed, registered and insured. Currently, D.C. only requires this of more powerful scooters.
In addition, scooter drivers would need to pass a test, wear a helmet and quit parking on the sidewalk.
Some scooter and moped owners are upset about not being able to park on the sidewalk because on the street their scooters can’t be locked down, making them easy to steal.
The D.C. Council will vote on the law later this year.
