WASHINGTON – U.S. 1/Baltimore Avenue at Powder Mill Road in Beltsville has reopened, more than seven hours after a head-on crash that left two people dead.
Maryland State Police Sgt. Darryl Clark says a car, believed to be a Camero, was heading south on U.S. 1 when it crossed the double line and struck a flat bed tow truck head-on.
When the crash occurred at at 1:38 a.m. Friday, the car burst into flames and the driver was ejected. A passenger was trapped in the car, Clark says.
Both people in the car died.
Speed played a role in the crash, police say.
The tow truck driver taken to Prince George’s Hospital Center. He is expected to survive.
