WASHINGTON – Virginia’s runs through May 31, making it the perfect time to stock up on emergency supplies before hurricane season officially starts on June 1.
“We recommend in your emergency kit to have a three-day supply of non-perishable food, a flashlight, a battery operated radio and, of course, some batteries,” says Le-Ha Anderson, spokeswoman with Dominion Virginia Power.
All of the items Anderson mentions are included on Virginia’s “” list of tax-exempt items, if they cost $60 or less.
“You can also purchase things like generators during the tax-free holiday, because those are the types of things people may be able to use during a holiday,” says Anderson.
Portable generators and generator power cords also are included on the list of tax-free items that cost $1,000 or less.
The National Weather Service says in case of a hurricane emergency, people should have a three-day supply of water, one gallon per person, per day and at least one extra day’s worth of clothes on hand.
