WASHINGTON – The weekend is finally upon us, and with a cooler weather outlook than weekends past, it’s a great time to get out and enjoy all that the area has to offer.
Here are some highlights of what’s going on July 26-28 in D.C., Maryland and Virginia.
To celebrate the end of the third annual , Think Local First will host a culminating farm- to-street community party at Union Market in Northeast D.C. The food festival will feature more than 125 area vendors, as well as chef demos, speakers and live music. The party will go from 1-7 p.m. There is a $5 suggested donation or a for purchase.
There is nothing more fascinating and entertaining than a species that rules the ocean. Now it’s your turn to overdose on all things shark at the National Aquarium’s Shark Weekend, July 27 and 28. Not only will participants be able to learn about sharks from the experts, but they will also be able to participate in a scavenger hunt and even get their faces painted like a shark.
Who has the best barbecue in Northern Virginia? Well, that argument will be settled this Saturday. On July 27, Northern Virginia Magazine will host a , where locals can taste and vote on barbecue from the contest’s third round of contestants. The event is free; there will also be live music and raffle prizes on hand.
In an effort to highlight a handful of the area’s local farms, Montgomery County will host its 24th Annual Farm Sale and Harvest Tour on Saturday, July 27 and Sunday, July 28. Several farms will be open from 10 a.m.-4 p.m., and many will have fresh produce for sale, live music, hayrides and other activities. Don’t forget to grab a copy of the before you hit the road.
Bethesda’s outdoor movie series is winding down, but you can still see two movies before the week-long event ends. On Friday, July 26, catch Katniss in action during a screening of “The Hunger Games,” and on Saturday, July 27, movie- goers will be treated to “Life of Pi.” A limited number of chairs will be provided, so to be on the safe side, bring a blanket.
The Capital Fringe Festival is coming to a close, but the annual theater event plans to go out with a bang. There are still 74 shows planned for Saturday, July 27 and 41 shows planned for Sunday, July 28. Plus, the festival will throw a closing party at Fort Fringe on July 28 at 8 p.m.
If you’re looking for a fun way to entertain yourself — and the kids — this weekend, check out the Summer Block Party at the Village at Leesburg on Saturday, July 27 at 3 p.m. The local (and hilarious) band will perform, plus there will be a cupcake eating contest and other free family-friendly activities.
