Local couple premieres documentary ‘Life According to Sam’ on HBO

WASHINGTON – Sean Fine and Andrea Nix Fine are back with a new documentary about a rare disease and its impact on 17-year-old Sam Berns and his family.

After being diagnosed with progeria, a disease that prematurely ages the body, the Berns family set out on a mission to find a cure for their son and other children affected by the disease.

“His parents were told there is no treatment, no cure, but they’re doctors, and just the kind of people they are, they decided to put everything into trying to find a treatment and cure for their son,” says Andrea Nix Fine, who won the 2013 Oscar with her husband for their film, “Inocente.”

She and her husband, both of Chevy Chase, stopped ²ÝÝ®´«Ã½ to discuss their three-year journey following the Berns family, who established shortly after Sam’s diagnosis.
