WASHINGTON – Democratic state Sen. Mark R. Herring took the lead in Virginia’s attorney general race, but the race remains too close to call.
Herring now has a 117-vote lead over Republican state Sen. Mark Obenshain out of 2.2 million votes cast, reports.
The race may go down in Virginia history as one the closest ever.
Obenshain held a 17-vote lead on Monday, according to the .
Herring picked up many of the new votes from a single Richmond voting machine that had gone uncounted on election night.
Local election boards have until midnight to certify their results. If the vote margin is less than 0.5 percent, the state will pay for a recount. With any margin of less than 1 percent, either candidate can request a recount.
