Swedish scientists close to pefecting self-cleaning plates

WASHINGTON – Scientists could be close to settling the age-old dispute of who is responsible for cleaning the dishes.

Swedish researchers have been working to perfect a plate and bowl set that contains a special self-cleaning agent resistant to liquid and dirt, .

Designers Hanna Billqvist and Anna Glansen collaborated with a Stockholm-based natural materials research firm and technology institute to develop the lightweight material, which is similar to Kevlar. It is malleable, yet durable enough to survive kitchen accidents.

They shaped the material using dining set molds and decorated them with a marble technique. An all-natural coating designed to repel liquids is added to the plates to make it fuss-free.
