WASHINGTON — Reihan Salam, a childless writer for Slate, has a bold suggestion. Non-parents who make more than the median income — about $50,000 a year — should pay a higher tax rate.
Salam says everyone in society benefits from the work of parents and that their willingness to have and raise children keeps the economy competitive. He also notes a government study that found — on average — it costs more than to raise a child for 18 years.
