NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (AP) — Huntington Ingalls Industries has received a contract worth more than $49 million to begin planning for work associated with defueling the USS George Washington.
Huntington Ingalls says the 12-month contract awarded to its Newport 草莓传媒 Shipbuilding division includes planning, engineering and shipboard inspections.
Newport 草莓传媒 Shipbuilding vice president Chris Miner says in a news release that the company hopes the contract is the first step toward a full award of the refueling and complex overhaul planning contract for the George Washington.
If approved, Huntington Ingalls says the George Washington would be the sixth Nimitz-class carrier to undergo a refueling and complex overhaul.
Complex overhauls occur only once in the 50-year-life of a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier.
