LOTR franchise inspires new beer line

WASHINGTON — “The Lord of the Rings” and “The Hobbit” movies are rated PG-13 for kids. But they’ve inspired a line of beer expected to be available this week.

The officially licensed Warner Brothers, New Line Cinema Hobbit beer comes compliments of the of Olympia, Washington. Here’s a sample of what’s on tap:

  • Gollum Precious Pils – a strong Imperial Pils labeled to note “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey,” the first Hobbit movie released.
  • Smaug Staugt – a classic Russian Imperial Stout.
  • Bolg Belgian Style Tripel – tips hat to “The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug,” second in the movie series.

The Hobbit beer labels include elfish writing, tales of the depicted characters and a UPC bar showing in silhouette a line of dwarves and a hobbit following the Wizard Gandolf.

Similar to other craft beers, the Hobbit line . All varieties are 9.5 percent alcohol by volume and come only in 22-ounce bottles.

The next Hobbit movie, “,” has a release date of Dec. 17, 2014.
