NORFOLK, Va. (AP) — Norfolk officials are working to reduce the city’s poverty rate.
A report released in June by the Mayor’s Commission on Poverty Reduction recommended ways to reduce poverty in the city. The Virginian- Pilot (http://bit.ly/1soUWpM ) reports that the city plans to spend about $400,000 to begin implementing the recommendations.
The money will be used for housing, early childhood education, workforce development and neighborhood revitalization.
The effort includes a new early childhood education center and a planning demonstration called Better Block. The demonstration will showcase the potential of distressed business strips.
City officials also want to improve Norfolk’s rental inspection program.
