VMI cadet convicted of making false assault report

LEXINGTON, Va. (AP) — A Virginia Military Institute cadet has been fined $500 for falsely reporting that a VMI police officer sexually assaulted her.

The cadet also received a 60-day suspended sentence.

Lexington/Rockbridge County Commonwealth’s Attorney Bucky Joyce tells The Roanoke Times (http://bit.ly/1uvIO3Y ) that the cadet was sentenced Tuesday after she was convicted of filing a false report. Joyce says the cadet plans to appeal.

Joyce says the cadet also faces petty theft charges filed by VMI police, along with making a false report related to that investigation.

The sexual assault claim stemmed from the theft investigation The cadet had told school officials that a VMI police officer performed a cavity search on her.

The newspaper didn’t identify the cadet becasue she plans to appeal.
